Monties 2015 - Advice wanted.
Submitted by Browndog on Wed, 2015-05-13 14:09
Bit the bullet and heading off to the Monties for a week early next month - cant wait!
We'll be hitting up the tackle shops to stock up on new toys before we go, any suggestions from seasoned Monties campaigners would be welcome. Planning on a bit of everything, bottom bouncing, trolling, flicking in the shallows, snorkelling etc.
Any must have bits of kit? Favourite lures or rigs? Basically any suggestions from those that have been there and done that.
Cheers,
BD.

Cheers Guys
Thanks fellas, reckon I have the beers sorted (not so much of a novice in that department!)
Plans at this stage are to take my 20lb flicky outfit, a 30lb general purpose, and my jigging rod with 50lb. Is that gonna be heavy enough, or am I going in under gunned? The charter will have gear for deep dropping, but they also have dinghys, yaks and was hoping to do a bit of flicking from the shore as well.
Never really played around with the plastics, but will grab some and give it a crack (hell if I can't catch with them up there I may as well give up!) and also thinking some poppers and laser pros or similar - thanks Leigh85. Would you tie these direct onto your leader, or would you use a wire trace for anything toothy up there?
Man, I'm getting so excited, will be great to cross this off the bucket list.

I used a wire trace for the laser pros, heading to the islands got a few maccies and tuna, but around the islands mainly trout, didn't seem to stop anything going for them.
i had only two outfits, a 4000 size reel with 30lb which I used for plastics and small lures and an 8000 size that started with 50lb but was spooled in about 30seconds, only spare spool I had was 30lb, so was reduced to that, but had no issues getting big fish.
so if you have a spare spool of line maybe take one just incase, I had never really caught a lot on plastics until I went up there, now that is mostly what I use. Managed to get a nice red emperor and a spangle, and a few unstoppables.
was mainly using squidgies 130mm fish and flick baits but that was all I really had back then, and McCarthys too. I found gold and orange to be the best.
good luck, would love to get back out there

Thanks
Thanks Dhuvinile.
Sounds pretty good, I suspected my 50lb setup was going to struggle against a GT, so may have to look at a heavier outfit. I definitely want to cross a GT off my list! Think I have all the other bases covered, bar the billfish, but hoping my 50lb will cover a mack if we come by them.
Thanks for the advice.

50lb outfit will most
50lb outfit will most definitely cover macks, I landed one last trip in 8m of water on a popper, hit at the transom! epic bite.
GT fishing at the monties is in quiet shallow water 1-6m (mainly) hence why heavy tackle is used to extract the fish with the use of a good skipper dragging the fish out under locked drag. good luck, you'll have a blast...fishing is epic. we landed over 400 fish in 5 days between 2 of us!
