Motor running not running drift results

Just wondering what people’s thoughts are about drift fishing with the motor still running or turned off. Do you think it makes a difference? I’m talking less than 20m.

20m or less

I would be of the opinion that yes it does make a difference. Ideally you want to be as quiet as possible in the shallows. For 25m plus, I reckon leave it idling, it’s important to know your engine is Ok particularly if you are heading  out wide.

If you're heading out wide and not confident your motor will start if turned off maybe you shouldn't be heading out wide.

Especially if the area is fished heavily, we have a few lumps close to town we fish via the GPS only. Other areas where sharks are a problem I recon it attracts them as well associating it with a free feed.

Boats catch fish trolling, which is far noisier than an idling motor

My favourite trick for shallow pinks and sambos at the Abrolhos when I still had the diesel. It’s like ringing the dinner bell in certain spots.

There was a thread on another site

That a guy required a tow when his motor stopped  because he'd  been idling for too long. My old girl is allways switched off.

looks like some votes either way I was just wondering because we drifted with the motor not running the other day and seemed to do better on the whiting in about 12m maybe it was the day or maybe the motor not sure. Only one way to find out further testing required.

Drift

Tue, 2019-02-26 17:28

I put the drift anchor out once you have found some ground and kill the motor,it's not like your going to drift for 5 minutes as your drifting over new ground all the time, give it time, if you get hit mark it and do another drift. If you are in a position that your not certain that the motor will start then you probably should not be out there in the first place.
