My first crayfishing "rookie mistake"!!
Bought a box of 5kg blue mackies Saturday morning, eagerly baited up a cray pot in the car garage which is my "man cave" (don't use it for the cars) and took pot out on boat and dropped it. Left for work this morning (Thursday) and just before we got to the front door to leave daughter asks "whats that horrible smell!" opened internal door to car garage and smell hit me! I had left the friggin box of blue mackies right next to the deep freezer!! stunk like F^&k!, garage must be fly-proof cause there were none in there. My fault for being to keen hopefully this helps so no one else makes same mistake - and if you smell something real bad down at Mindarie boat ramps - its just me launching with my rotten baited pots, hope the crays like em ha ha cheers dave

Don't think you are robinson caruso
I'm sure you are not the first to do that, when you have left the pots in your boat full baited up and haven't been near the boat for a couple of days then you know what the word stink is all about.

haha I reckon crays love the rotten stuff, hopefully you end up with a few more in the pots for your troubles. The blue macs seem to disintegrate quite fast. If you're not pulling every 1-2 days I would also suggest putting in some more solid stuff like snapper/dhue frames

Wrong
You are wrong there Andy, fresh bait works best but if your pots have two bait baskets dump one today and put fresh stuff in and do the other one tomorrow, that way all gets eaten and there is fresh each day

I've always used bait that's been in the sun for a day and a night and have always done well. I've always been of the understanding fresh bait brings the Wobby's
From my reckoning Crays are scavenging bugs and will go by strong scent. Just my opinion for what it's worth

brings the oils out?
Bait -- leaving the stuff out in the sun to dry a little will bring the oils out before it goes off, could be something in it. I don't believe that fresh bait per se brings wobbies, from long experience in the industry, but certain types of fish certainly do. Sea mullet, tailor and buff bream are the main culprits, in my experience. My PB was ten in one steel beehive pot, baited with mullet, on the Lucky Bay wall. Another day I had 7 in a batten pot, can't remember what bait. As for occies, only hang fish heads by wires in the pots once the crays are really running, or you seem to get more than your share of the bastards. And flathead and garfish are worthless , DAMHIK.
