Assumptions!! I'd had a few
Assumptions!! I'd had a few drops and was half way through a drift. I could see him a mile and a half or so inside. He started heading North then took a hard left turn straight for us and went from about 15knts to about 30knts. Around the back of me so close I had to hang on from the wash of his boat so he could go straight up on my drift line. Even if you had the spot or sum thing close wouldn't you go sum where else or wait? Or even wait till they wer off the back and go up and say Iv got this mark do you minde if we have a drop. He was so close I had to reverse while I was winding up!

Just saying personally I wouldnt have put up a 5 yr old pic with a different crew aboard that shows their faces pretty clearly.
I'd want to have all the T&I's crossed and dotted-i.e actual photo of them in action.
Kind of like the cops sending you an old speed camera pic with a fine saying "we saw you do this again yesterday, heres the proof"

He has been fishing out there for years and wouldnt need to ping you has plenty of his own spots and probally most of yours . .and most of the guys he normally fishes with are freindly and dont mind sharing there spots out there he may have mistook you for being a nice guy

im with you reece it's all about etiquette, it's a massive ocean and there is no need for anyone to come that close to someone who is fishing a spot, especially when you are that far out with very few other boats around!
My spots are so secret even the fish don't know about them !

We were heading out to the trench about 3 years ago - and stopped about 4 miles west of west end as the anchor had come loose due to the snubber breaking - we spent about 5 minutes on the bow tying up and this clown comes screaming over from way off abusing us saying we were on his drift - we motored off and left him to vent to his mate - was pretty clear what we were doing - but highlights the tools that like to come onto forums to make a point over something they had wrong in the first place
seperately -i think the whole pinging whinge is a crock, i get why people get upset, but the reality is the ocean belongs to no one.... oh and by the way - the trench is my spot - so no pingers please..... :-)

Well that sucks. That boat is almost a dead ringer for mine. Same make, colour, size everything. Does this mean Im gonna get dirty looks when Im out on the water? Everyone just needs to chill. Its a big ocean and no-one owns it. By the way Ive never 'pinged' anyone or even done a deep drop yet (want to soon but)

ok lets put it a different way, say your camping on the beach having a fish and i set up so close you can smell my farts. how do you feel?. to me i couldnt give a rats ass about "my spot" its all about being considerate and giving the first person some space. now this all goes out the window if your all chasing a school of fish.
he may or may not have been pinging your spot either way he should have given you space.
had 2 old blokes fly past me and a mate ( non fisherman ) at about 20knots probably 30m away, did a massive u turn scream up to us at same speed jump on the reverse so to not hit my sea anchor causing shite loads of wash, mate takes a dive no sea legs mind you smashes his elbow on the esky, i grabbed the rail and ask what the f*&k he was thinking, he yells back i like this spot been hitting it for years, i said thats great but how about taking it easy as my mate is crawling around on the floor picking himself up. mate turns to the old bloke and says f&*k off champ its a f&*king big ocean.
to me that comment from a non fisherman/boater sums it up nicely.

I am not taking sides on this one ,but here's what I have done and will keep on doing . If I travel 30mile To a patch of ground that I have on my GPS and there is another boat on it well ,move over ,There is no way I will turn around and drive another 10 mile just to find someone else on that bit of ground .I wouldn't give a shit if you put my pic up on a forum or not. Most ground I fish has been marked by other boats I am not the only one that fishes out of two rocks. But I will not be pushed of the ground I have been fishing for the last 40 years .
In saying that I will not go out of my way to fish Or mark someone if I don't have a mark in that area.
I have Had boats come and fish next to me plenty of times . I just out fish them and they soon move along.

Yep, I'd have to agree.
Also, I f I had another mark not too far Id move along, but if it was the only mark I had in the area, I would make the call to search for new ground or try to work the same area giving the other boat clearance to work his drift line. There wouldn't, be many secret spots left offshore metro and if boating continues to explode, I would think on a nice day in the future, it would be normal for more than 1 boat To be on or very close to a mark you have.

I don't know about you fellas but I personally go fishing for enjoyment so I don't understand why people get so worked up about this. Go and ENJOY yourselves, play happy families, nod and wave and if he comes close enough say G'day. Don't swear your box off because at the end of the day he might be the bloke to save your life when your boat starts taking on water 15km from land, or you have a bloody heart attack because all the bloods gone to your head from the rage of seeing someone else fishing in your spot!
If they can fish safely without bashing and crashing into your boat or tangling lines, while its not being ethical, its probably ok.
If he's really that close I rekon jump ship, take his missus and nick off. An easy way to get him off your spot

pinging is when said dickhead anchors up and then swings around on the anchor and bangs into your boat (happened to me at north reef of Dampier in the days before GPS) maybe that bloke had that spot logged into his gps as well as you
