Naturaliste reef

Hey guy's, just wondering if anyone has fished out around the naturaliste reef lately? Thinking of heading that way tomorrow but haven't fished it in a while. Any reports good or bad would be handy prior to heading that way.

cheers

Perplexed about naturaliste reef

Wed, 2014-01-01 03:26

I find it quite strange that there has been no replies to this post seeking info about Naturaliste reef. Is it a secret or do people just not bother with the place, last year (2012 that is) I asked for info about the place and the silence was deafening. On a chart it looks like the goods for all types of fishing it's isolated deep water nearby and to me looks like a natural F A D.
If you go out there Gonad Man could you please let me know how you got on and what conditions out there are like.
Thanks

Worth it?

Found out years ago that most times it wasn't worth the travel from Bunbury out there because good fish could be caught closer in.
There is some good heavy bottom in 19 fathoms inside the reef that always produced so that became the limit of travel if one decided to head south instead of hitting up the Bouvards to the north and copping it on the way back in to the sea breeze.

Be Careful

Trolling around the reef is good for yellow tail kingfish but its a potentially dangerous place - keep an eye on the swell! Fishing around the reef in around 30-40 meters should get you Dhufish and snapper

It gets hammered by all and

It gets hammered by all and sundry through the holidays.Best to go straight after the ban or during the winter. As Carnarvonite stated long haul from Bunno and better ground found to the north.Like most big marks on the charts everyone can see em so its natural that it gets pretty heavy traffic. There are some deep pinnacles out the back of it in 60mtrs that produce YTK and sambos,S/west bank would produce better if you were based in Busso.

Thanks to all for the replies

Thanks guys, I'm in Mandurah and I would have to take the boat to Bunbury to go out to it. It would be a long haul and after reading the replies I'm wondering if it is worth the travel and the ride back with a south wester up my tail. To be honest I'd rather go into a decent sea than travel with it behind me, when you are on top of a big swell looking down it can be a bit daunting in a 6 metre quinine. However if the right weather forecast comes along I may give it ago and put up a post about the experience.

Worth the trip

Have fished out there 3 times since my original post and have done well everytime. Might have something to do with an ex pro wet liner giving me a few GPS points in the area but I'll just put it down to good fishing

The backside of the reef in 60m has produced the better fish, dhu's consistently over 15kg and pinkies around the 6-8kg mark. First drift over the mark resulted in two double headers, 15 and 17.5kg dhu on one line and a 8kg pinky and a bust off on the other. Basically bagged out in no time on every occasion.

Did find some other ground inside the reef which held a big school of pinkies but they have since moved on.

Tried trolling around a few times out there and picked up a small yellow tail king one day but not a lot of action otherwise.
