keen to hear from anyone using this system as there primary marine gps or knows about it... ive been curious as to what level of chart this is, ie is it equivelent to silver, gold, platinum etc??? i see in the latest trade a boat mag theres a waterproof cover for ipad that looks really good for about $150, this package looks like a really good system for use as a gps, what do you think, any pros / cons?

It might seem like a
It might seem like a reasonable option but i recon it cant beat a proper chart plotter. Nice app to play around with and the maps are the same as you get for a chart plotter. I don't think wa has any platinum info anyways?
Unless they've updated it, the main problems are that it can only store 200 spots (which isn't a lot depending how you use it). The accuracy is not brilliant, in that it updates slowly and the maximum zoom isn't that great. On my sounder/chart plotter I can get within a meter or two of a mark, but using navionics on my phone, I can't rarely get better than 10m. The tracking isn't as good as a chart plotter either plus you don't get many other features (it does allow you to show distance and speed though). The tracking only holds a certain number of spots too before it starts writing over the originals. Prob not an issue for most trips, but I think it only holds a few hrs worth (so you may not be able to keep the whole days track). You can only add 3 types of points, waypoints don't declutter, and I'd they haven't fixed it, searching and adding waypoints is a little tedious (at one version you had to search a waypoint then tap an hold it for 3+ seconds and if you were 2 pixels off it would add a diff mark). You also can't backup your points, except by one by one emailing them (unless they've fixed this?)
Depending on the case, the screen may not be super easiy readable in the sun, but depends on the quality. If you keep the ipad in the sun in summer, it might shut off due to overheating.
However, the maps are as good as the charts on your chartplotter and the ipad makes it great to browse around spots. Particularly if you're looking over areas to try.

good info hlokk
was unaware of the 200 point maximum
backing up though can be done by sinking between your devices, ie ifone and ipad so if one is damaged the other will keep your info... i think its only a matter of time before these marine apps take over from traditional plotters
what i like apart from the cost... is the massive screen, but it sounds like it still has a ways to go to be a true competitor to the traditional plotters for accuracy and memory

Sure, but no gps/sounder
Sure, but no gps/sounder hookup either. Great toy, but no replacement for the real thing.
Rayview is pretty cool though:
