if you want soft plastics...

you're gonna get swamped by the amount of brands that are out there. although there are some standout ones

berkley has some killer plastics in the gulp and powerbait ranges. the 3in minnow type ones are some of the more popular ones (these look like a fish), and i believe the more experienced ones on FW use them. problem is, they're only good for the big fish, whiting won't come within 10 metres of them

for smaller plastics, i reckon most don't get smaller than a grub type plastic (these have a curly tail at the rear end). the 2in grubs tend to be smaller than 2in worms i've observed. not sure about which type works best on whiting (im finding out myself, lemme know if you come to a verdict lol) but grubs work well for most species

squidgies also have a good rep but i personally cannot stand the sandy stuff they come with...gets under your nails and drives you insane trying to clean them out >:(

atomic has a plastic called the 1.75in paddletail in their old range. this thing is seriously tiny, so it could work on whiting. the melville bluewater shop stocks this, haven't seen it at BCF

for the saltwater, metals and poppers are the way to go. halco twisties are the go-to metal for most lure users here to use on tailor and salmon. not sure about weights as i personally like the keep my lures small, but 20g - 40g is a good range of weights. going larger doesn't hurt for salmon, and smaller for herring and skippy. just make sure your rod can handle the weight if you do go larger

poppers are my favourite lure to use in the salt, partly owing to one helluva experience using them when i was younger (check my profile for details on that lol). all brands work but halco roostas are my personal fav, due their good weight to size ratio for long casting. however halco doesn't do small poppers unlike R2S (their smallest one is 8cm long, compared to R2S's 3.5cm bubble pop), but poppers are really only useful for the big fast fish like tailor, salmon and GTs so you won't need anything too small

diving minnows aren't as popular as metals or poppers in the salt, since they can't be cast as far, but they can work if you're in the right place at the right time and arent limited to super fast fish the way metals and poppers generally are. rapala x-raps are good saltwater minnows for bigger fish but halco scorpions work as well. scorpions are also cheaper and come in a tiny "35mm" size (i measured the actual size, turns out the be 40mm lol) for the smaller fish.

EDIT: i forgot to mention the tassie devils. ive heard these catch herring like nothing else so these could be worth a look. ive never used them before tho
