Need to lubricate her box
Submitted by Lamby on Fri, 2015-10-09 09:36
Well after years of having a nice wet box, trophy wife is going dry on me! I usually just top her off with salty water & have always been a fan of a salty box to be honest. Just looking to see if anyone uses something different like propelene glycol & if so where do you get it? Benefits over salt water? Some may use ky, I mean whatever gets you a wet one right!
Anyway I am sure there are some seamen out here that can point me in the right direction

Sounds like she has a leak
Sounds like she has a leak mate, wont matter what you top her up with if thats the case. I use glycol cause thats what it said in the instructions when i bought mine. Mine has a small leak as well nowdays (old age) so i check the levels then top it up like you have been doing. Rememeber always look after your box !!!!

There were the odd occasions in the past were I’ve used Talc powder to trace back to the leaky hole ..

You are always going to have
You are always going to have some minor leakage in an older lady but she is not a gusher! With glycol Willo is the viscosity thicker & therefore less bubble? Where did you purchase it from?

Back to yr leaky box mate yeaj that's what I was told re the bubbles but i don't think it really matters I've heard seawater distilled etc all work. I buy it from bunnings in the paint dpt for around 17 $ 750 ml just keep a btl in the boat. Oh yeah and fungus and other crap doesn't grow in it.

they only recommend
Propolyne glycol so your wet box don't explode if it freezes we dont have that problem in australia .ethelene glycol is toxic to marine life they why they say not to use it .distilled water is fine tap water can grow alge giving you problems .i sell propolyne glycol at work for water cooled tig torches so if you need some let me know

Yep that's how I understand
Yep that's how I understand it. Also a lot of talk about thicker viscosity fluids having better reading at speed with less bubble etc. hence questions about propylene. Appreciate the offer mate
