Need an Uber?
Submitted by randall df223 on Mon, 2016-07-25 18:47
Adam, please delete this if it is against the rules (i'm not sure).
I am now activated as an Uber driver (to earn a bit extra income and get a few extra deductions off my tax!)
If you use Uber and are planning a night or day out, feel free to contact me via private message in advanced. While you cannot pre-book an Uber, if i have nothing else going on, i could be sitting in your driveway ready to accept the fare...

How does it work Randall
Do you drive when you want to - or are there rosters etc. Have you thought about hitting up Subi oval at half time in a couple of weeks - your sticker could get you a bit of business

Pay that.... I had to wait
Pay that....
I had to wait for it to be regulated before i could get secondary employment approval. But that happened at the start of this month.
You need an f extension on your MDL, your vehicle needs to be registered as an omnibus (which my wife's is).
Go through an application process and once your activated by uber they let you download the driver app.
Drive whenever you want for as long as you want. You have to go "online" for jobs to be pushed out to you. You can go offline at anytime.
No cash changes hands.
Rider's credit card is debited at the end of the fare to Uber. Uber keep a percentage and pay the driver once a week.
There are a couple of things to be aware of. The driver has to pay the GST on the full fare. So for me that means out of the fare, uber keeps their cut, i pay gst, all vehicle, fuel and phone expenses and income tax on the balance.
The benefit to me is that now i can claim a percentage of my vehicle running costs, servicing, tyres, interest on finance, and some of my phone bill.
I dont think its possible to earn a decent living on, but for someone who works fulltime and has spare time afterwards, or students, etc there is some spending money there to be earned.
Oh, and by the way, if you are thinking about starting, i have a reference code that i get commission from if you end up driving for uber. And in return, i can guide and advise you through the process.

We use a Sri Lankan fella
We use a Sri Lankan fella that used to own a small restaurant around the corner from us and we coincidentley got him as an Uber driver one night. He has a big 8 seater people mover and we now use him for airport runs and he only charges twenty bucks (normal taxi $38 from our place) I reckon a win win.

I reckon there’s a gap in the market for Uber to break into the skippers market whereby a team of two meet you at your car and drive your car home for you with you as the passenger if you’ve had too much to drink. There’s already a company in Perth that does it but they charge $199/year membership as well as $67 per ride for 10km and then $2.4 per km after that.
With a family of 5 and three kiddy seats in the car there is no way we can ever get a taxi so my Wife and I need to take turns being the skipper for BBQs etc.

Learn something new every day
Your post made me go and look at the laws for alchohol and boating
And I learned you can drink as much as you like as long as you don't lose control of the boat. I guess this will only ever be tested when there is an accident.
Now your post makes sense and I can see why you could need a service to drive you all home after a day on the water!
In NSW, they have RBT on the water like everywhere else.

I believe every state bar WA has on water RBT. In WA you can only be breath tested on the water and charged if you have been involved in an accident.

I dont believe thats strictly true Steve but probably is in practice.
If they can prove you are not capable of safely operating it they can.
However in practice its only an accident thatll do that.
Certainly that bloke Woolard who crashed into the pole in the Swan was absolutely slaughtered and put a girl in hospital but not sure if he actually got charged or it was only a civil case?

If I remember right they reveiwed this after Woolards accident and decided it wasnt warranted.
Personally, I prefer not to have MORE regulation, however of course if some pissed up tosser put one of my family in hospital Id change my view, or deal with it myself
Remember though that with such a limit, you would be subjected to it ANYTIME you were aboard, not just when actually steaming

Leave it as is...
The majority of boaters are responsible enough to do the right/safe thing IMO. I spend a shitload of time at Rotto over summer when its super busy and the majority of people are on the piss at lunch time, many of which are operating boats and I rarely see any problems with regards to unsafe boating.

Too many judges and lawyers
They dont want to stop taking the 50ft launch to rotto and smashing the champagne all day. Therefore WA will be protected a bit more from these laws.

I think you misread my post
I think you misread my post mate. Definitely wouldn't advocate that people drive a boat in a state where they are legally unable to drive their car.
I was referring to a skipper service that drives your car home from a BBQ at a friend's house or a meal down the pub... not drive your boat back home from the ramp.

Towing uber
If someone had a suitable tow vehicle with enough seats (6 or more patrol, land-cruiser or even better a 79 series troop carrier) and suitable insurance it could be a one person operation. I would potentially use this service, and just leave my car at the ramp to be picked up the following day.

Thats not something i would
Thats not something i would be promoting. I have a philosophical problem with someone being in charge of a vessel and drinking to such a point they wouldnt be legal to drive a car home. The general rule on my boat is that it is dry, or at least i am (as in sober).

Uber
Didn't mean to rub you the wrong way Randall, but my attitude towards driving is I personally won't do it unless I know that I'm going to blow zero though I don't mind having a beer on the boat and the better half either drives us home or meets is at the ramp and we leave one vehicle there. I think there is an oppertunity for someone to make a few bucks and help people who are operating within the law preserve a few brownie points.

Mainly because of the plate owners have been majorly shafted for fees etc, for something that would now appear to not have been needed.
Id say, for better or worse a plate owner wouldve have expected the Gov to protect it

What spreads? Competition to a monopoly service run out of Singapore that's been ripping off people and providing piss poor service for decades? Bring it on I reckon, hopefully Western Power are the next to face some stiff competition just like Alinta Gas have recently.

I certainly agree with the service side, last year I had cause to politely explain to the taxi driver why I wasnt going to leave him a tip.
Because the BO and food smell was so strong I had to keep the window open a little at 5.30 am in mid winter, freezing.
Just think as a principal, the gov has not stood up to their end of the deal, which could happen to anyone who pays fees and has bought an asset from the government.

Uber or something similar
Uber or something similar had to happen in Perth to break the taxi monopoly. The service Uber offers is far superior than catching a cab, it's all done on an app, it's cheaper, there's no cash involved, the drivers are friendly and you get a full readout of your route and costing via email. I agree the taxi plate holders have been shafted and the gov needs to help them out in this respect as they've allowed Uber and newcomer Shofer to carry on in business. The whole face of this is evolving and becoming a more realistic option for tourists as well, who like us get ripped for everything service wise in this city. It was cheaper for us to get Ubers in Melbourne recently than catching a tram as you are only paying for one direct route, that was city central though.

not drivers
its taxi owners not drivers, drivers could just move to Uber I guess but individual plate owners have been paying the Gov for eons for the privelidge only to be dropped when they expected to be covered!

they're being made to improve
they're being made to improve their service now by competition. I have a problem with unionists holding businesses and individuals to ransom cos they have the monopoly.
As for the "part timers cherry picking someones future" pretty harsh on Randal ...what about his future? and that of everyone else who wants to work but cant because one company has a stranglehold on an entire industry.

When I say advice he rings me for an hour to ask me 100 questions about my provider and then never, ever changes his.
For the boy's Xbox, when in doubt reset everything. If that doesn't work restore everything. I call it the slash and burn as I don't have the temper to troubleshoot to a great extent. If that doesn't work something's farked.... that's about the extent of my tech knowledge.
We had a similar issue with our house which we only picked up due to massive mobile phone bills (kids watching youtube at home) and it ended up being the wifi in the modem and it needed to be replaced.

Try that mate. Other than that, screw wifi and get an ethernet cable and plug directly into your modem. Better for online gaming, don't have to fudge around with drop outs and horrible lag. Provided of course either your modem is near to the xbox or you don't mind a 15-30 meter cable strewn across the house tripping everyone up!

Change happens in every
Change happens in every industry though. For example, people that owned a video store when online streaming and Foxtel took over won't be compensated. I don't believe taxi operators should be compensated. They would have retained a much larger share of the market if the industry had sorted itself out 5 years ago. Stinking, filthy rattle trap cars with stinking, filthy rattle trap drivers. And don't get me started on the Cabcharge surcharge........
