hi mate , just nw of the marina well within sight of land is little island , if you anchor near there in 2.5-3.5m of water there are heaps of herring /skippy/garfish to be caught with the aid of a bit of burley, my kids love to go there, there are also sea lions to be seen on the beach there for most of thew year.  cheers

If you're going out of

If you're going out of Hillarys, make sure you get a map or a chartplotter as there are several reef around that area you could get stuck in if you are new to boating. Some areas of the river can be easy. Otherwise, if you can find a mate that knows the area to take out the first time, then when you take your son out you'll be more confident and know where you're going. Make sure you have a childs life jacket of appropriate size too.

If you can get into some squid and whiting (not too hard if you get the right areas) then it can be great fun for him.

Not homebrew!!!

Just rushed at work with a typo. Trying to say in a tinnie dont rush eager young boaties into to deep water. Let them gain some time on the water (TOTW) for safety sake. I was amazed the other day off dampier in about 20+k Westerlies  a tinnie about 4m in the middle of Mermaid straight short anchored with a 2m chop fishing. I drove past and let the youngsters know that it would be the best spot NOT to fish in, told them a good tinnie spot and advised them that if they are dead keen to stay there, let heaps more anchor robe out because if it is that short and a bigger wave comes through it could drag the bow down and swamp the sucker.

Fortunatelly they listen, followed me to the lea spot (they had no plotter/sounder), I led them to a little bombie where at least they would have some fun (They where FIFO youngster getting some fun in on a Day off). Got their mobile number incase of trouble, and called them 2hrs later to see if they were OK. They were and actually got into some fish.

Thats what Im talking about.

Ill edit the above.

Cheers guys and sorry, but somedays getting a point across in a busy day calls for a rush job, and I DONT like being called to "Pronounce Life Extinct" for victims off the sea. Done that 3 times and I dont want to do that again!!!

3mile

Welcome to the site , the three mile covers a fair bit of ground from scarborough through to two rocks , as the others hve said spend some time on the maps and gps and watching the swell and winds ,  most of the areas have been hit hard but with some time spent inside and outside the reef all sorts of good fish will turn up and be enjoyed by all memebers of your family,  join the local radio club as well and keep in touch when launching and returning will always give you peace of mind no matter how far you travel
