New GPS

What GPS units are you all using?

Just about to start upgrading the boat electrics.

I am pretty well sold on the 587/TM260 sounder but need something to update the hds 5 plotter.

Cheers

I've got a Garmin Gpsmap

I've got a Garmin Gpsmap 750s. It has a nice big screen, brightly lit, good resolution. It has a touch screen which makes zooming in/out and moving around really easy. I think it's a really good GPS unit. The 750s is a combo unit but there is also a 750 model which just does GPS.

It has radar support, but I don't have the radar dome so don't know what that's like.

The only drawback is that the BlueChart maps don't seem to be quite as detailed/accurate as the Navionics maps around the Perth area.

Is there a particular reason that you need to update your hds 5? If you can use a furuno 587 as a stand alone sounder and then the hds 5 as a stand alone plotter then you've already got all your bases covered.

What sort of budget do you have?

If you really want to upgrade just get a bigger HDS, they are my favorite GPS by a nautical mile.

The HDS5 i have at the moment has some issues. Stops tracking and stops reading speed often resultin in having to turn off and unplug to get it to reset only for it to work for another 10 minutes and do it again.

Wouldnt mind a bigger screen aswell

I'm using the HDS9 gen2 as a stand alone plotter, bloody awesome unit and too easy to use. I've bought a HDS10 for the project boat, huge screen.

Is that the Gen 2 touch? So do you have just the plotter and not the combo? Looking at this model as a plotter only and you think its a good thing?

I run a Garmin 750 as my gps, mainly as it was on the boat already. Furuno 587 as the sounder (excellent).

The Garmin is heaps better than I thought it would be and I really like the touch screen which surprised me. The 7 inch widescreen screen is to small for my aging eyes, I would prefer a GPS in portrait aspect ratio like the classic Raymarines, but most units these days are widescreen which don't fit in the dash with 2 units (designed for one big unit I guess).

However, Garmin Bluecharts sucks balls!
