Gps's

 Hi peeps,

first attempt at a post, please be kind!

ive got a little runabout, around 4.6m has a bit of fruit but I'm wanting to stick a GPS on her. There's so many to choose from I'm a little confused with what to get. I'm wanting something not too flash, given I"ll be upgrading the boat soon. Do they all need map cards purchased separately and constantly updated. Cheers for any info..

 Should be able to pick

Should be able to pick something up second hand for a reasonable price and being it's second hand will probably still have saved fishing spots left on it if your lucky. Believe that Navionics cards are a lot better than other brands of maps but usually come with the gps as far as I know. I run an old lowrance global map 5200c as my main system but have a lowrance elite 5 hdi combo as a backup, the old one actually starts up a fair bit quicker and a little simpler to use.

keep an eye on ebay etc, a good cheap starter is a Navman 5500 for a couple of hundred then buy a Navionics card that you can use in your next upgrade as well.

 Thought about the phone

Thought about the phone apps, but then I wanted something to show me knots as well plus bit hesitant to have my phone out exposed to salty elements and knowing me it'll end up overboard.

if your upgrading your boat no reason you cant take the gps with you and having said that how about a decent gps fish finder combo, lowrance have a good selection out at the moment. all the hds units or look into second hand gen one combo's

True. Might look at a combo unit, being a small boat don't want to go crazy and end up with too much on board..easy to do. Being a girl too, I want something that's easy to navigate around and reasonably straight forward to install..not that I'm too much of a girl where it has to look pretty too loll, just want it to do its job to show me where the fish are

All the combos are easy to install and only 2 cables. Far better then having to mount 2 screens in a tinny I reckon that's if u wanted a fish finder as well as a gps

Not in to combos, if it breaks down you lose both, with single units you can still fish if either one packs up plus not having to alter settings and screen sizes

Compass

IMO compass's should be compulsory for any boat going more than 1nm offshore. In all my boats it was the first thing I looked at after checking the hull and engine and in most cases got replaced with a better one and not some cheap rubbish.
