a mate of mines Symmetre
a mate of mines Symmetre played up as if it had sotnes inside jamming up the gearing, would work fine and then just screw up that you wouldnt be able to wind...
thinking that it must have been in saltwater and when it was washed not al the water was out, so the salt dried up into crystals....

Id say the grease is water
Id say the grease is water spoiled with some salt croutons which have stiffened the feel of the reel.
