The extras you get with a Sustain over the FJ Stradic are not really worth the added cost. IMO you should consider the Stradic instead. If I can find the link to Alan Hawk discussing this I'll post it up but it was quite interesting and informative. Then you can add the extra $ towards the rod.

Just a thought.

I use a starlo classix 10'6" -$120

Nice rod for the money. I have it paired with a stradic and Fins wind tamer braid. Loving the Wind tamer braid, no wind knot issues irrespective of wind or rain.

i'll have a look at allen

i'll have a look at allen hawk good read hey the stradics no dout are great reels i have a 1000 i love but the reason i went with the sustain 3000 is it has slightly deeper spool lighter and a kg more drag while its main use will be spinnin for tailor it might make the odd trip out on the boat spinnin for small tuna or dollies so that little extra capacity might make the difference out there

havent seen the windtamer yet have to have a look i was looking at some diawa braid bloody thin stuff but i was thinkin mayb it'll to thin round some of the reefy holes i fish.

Samaki Zing? They do a 902

Samaki Zing? They do a 902 8-15lb. Don't know the cast weight for it but I imagine it would be something like 15-40g.

Braid, 12lb Powerpro. Not the thinnest by any means but that can be handy around the reefs & it flows through the guides nicely. Behaves really well & doesn't cost an arm & a leg either.

Choices, choices, choices!

I was recently looking for a spin outfit just on the lighter side to your description and for similar reasons.

I have used the Stradics, Sustains previously (Rareniums are an alternative - though no personal experience) and Im a great fan of the Shimano's I think if you want durability in a reel Daiwa cant match the reliability for the same price as these, however I scoped out a couple of good deals from Mo tackle recently and took advantage of this - they were running off Certate high speeds for $299 down from $579, 2010 models admittedly but they are magsealed and a great little reel. Very limited stock so might be a couple left over. Only issue would be line capacity - I got ~150m of 20lb power pro (Im a big fan of power pro, as CF says its not the thinnest in the world but a great all rounder and I use it for all sorts). Alternatively if you look at Rayannes down in Adelaide they are doing Daiwa caldia's for $289, mention this to Motackle and get 10% further reduction - you can get a caldia 3000 for $260 now thats also a good deal. But if you are shimano man then the Stradic/sustains will definitely do the job

Rod wise there was an excellent heavy spin rod on here a couple of days ago - NS Black Hole Cabin II MONSTER, that would lump a 60g twisty all the way to the moon. I recently got a Daiwa Black Label which Im loving. I've got the 772mhrs its rates 10-22g but will cast 35g and has a great action - superb rod but perhaps a bit light for you. Im finding it ideal to zing a little stickbait off the reefs just north of Trigg. G-Loomis have some nice rods in that range - Melville Tackleworld had 30% off their range over the last few weeks so worth checking out - and whilst down there pop into Oceanside those boys could sort you out Im sure. I had a 9ft Lemax President Royal previously that I gave away to a mate and wished I had kept it - lovely rod. I have a few Lemax rods and they are very well crafted and have a fantastic action.

a bit of extra rod length will get you the extra distance come salmon season, the shorter lighter rods are a lot of fun for metro flicking Im sure there is some middle ground in there somewhere.

Braid - power pro as CF says - reliable and well priced, Fins and Suffix are good and if you are woried about reef - use a little leader - 3-4m should do it
