new to trolling update sorry

hi guys, hoping for some help, just about to pick up my 1st boat (pics coming soon) and need some advise on trowlling. What type of lures should I be starting with that can catch a broad range of fish, will trawl the FADs etc. should I be using metal leaders, what speed should I be trawling at etc...sorry for the very broad question but I am just starting out and want to get a better understanding. thanks in advance.

Trawling is towing a net, trolling is where you have lines out the back

Nice pick up Carnarvonite, there is no way anyone would have got that wrong 'Back when you were a pro'. I bet he goes for Eagles as well.

If you are chasing mackeral and wahoo with sharp teeth then a single strand wire trace is a good idea.  I like trolling rapalas yes they are more $$ but they swim straight out of the packet and generally stay that way.  get a few different sizes/depths and colours to cover all bases and go about 6-8 knots.  All the colours tend to work

skirts are also a good prospect but I have only just got into them myself but you can go a bit faster 10-12 knots

Laser Pro's are a good cheapish option. The 160 size seems to catch a lot of fish around the perth metro region. I find the laser pros outfish the more expensive x-raps and hyro magnums. Also the 190 size tends to catch bigger fish but you get bites less often on them.

Skirts can also produce fish, but I don't know much about using them. You can travel faster with them though.

It's up to you whether you use a wire trace or not. Dark coloured single strand is the best for this. You should get more hookups without the wire, but you run the risk of a mackeral chomping through your line. I would say the odds of you loosing gear is still pretty low, because mackeral generally bite the lure itself and don't bite far up enough to cut the line. I used to use wire but now I don't bother.

6 knots is about the speed you want to be trolling at for tuna and mackeral. Try to look out for bait schools on your sounder or birds circling in the air. They move around so it can be difficult finding the fish sometimes.

The FADS get brought in around May and put back out in November so you'll have to wait a bit for that.

Also being winter the water temperatures are lower and there would be less pelagic action around.

Be patient, you have to put in long hours to get the rewards.

Should I be connecting the lure straight to a swivel?

Ha ha ha he's one of your own Carnarvonite. I use the wind on leaders usually 80lb and yes tie on a decent clip  swivel so you can change lures easily.

Be prepared to put in heaps of hours

Mon, 2013-07-08 18:37

Last year when news of mackies were abundant in metro, we decided to give it a good go. Our first trip out we trolled for five hours and got 1. But still it was our first metro mackie. Second attempt was a little better, took us 3 hours to land another. Figured out its not my thing. Also no one has mentioned to use a teaser of some sort. We made our own by buying a bird teaser with about 5 reflective orange blobs hanging off it.
