Newby saying hello

Hi everyone!.

Just wanted to introduce myself as a new member to the fishwrecked family, names Jason and apart from the odd bit of freshwater and beach fishing I haven't really gone beyond that. However thanks to a bloke I work with I now have a serious bug of fishing & camping in me that I'm more than happy to indulge.

I found this site trolling (pun intended) google for fishing info, especially for WA (live in perth) and seeing some of the pic's on here has just inflamed me to get out with a big 12ft surfy and hit up some monsters, my first goal is to hit up Exmouth for some GT's and my favourite the mighty Mully. Any advice/tidbits or other info no matter how useless you may think will be taken in greatly (I've already been busted reading this site at work a few times lol). I'm thoroughly enjoying reading all the stories and now also watching/reading 'Reeltime" (bloody awesome so far!). I dont have any gear at the moment so I'm really looking to get suited up with some good but cheap stuff that'll lead me up in experience and skill to take on the big fish up north.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope to see you all around someday.

Welcome aboard, on your way to exmouth, plan to stop at steep point (4wd needed) and various spots (like the blow holes - 2wd, and quobba) between carnarvon and exmouth!

thanks guys, also wanted to

thanks guys, also wanted to add that I'm really gunning to have a try of fly fishing. Ever since I saw ol' Rexy nab some rainbow trouts in the blue mountains I've wanted to have a shot of lobbing a fly. I'm not picky about where I go or what I catch, as long as I get a good pic and something for the pan I'm happy :)

@ Bitten yeah mate I'm a metro sandgroper

As for gear gonna layby some cheapo light stuff from kmart just to get started, basic jarvis walker/shimano type stuff.. used to run ugly stik/shakespeare when I was a boy. Also planning a visit to see the boys and girls @ oceanside. I've read some real positive feedback on here so far so I feel confident and comfortable they can get me onto the 2-5kg range fishies till I learn how to handle the bigger weights. Again I'm all landbased preferring beach/jetty/rock but I'm itching (fleabitten like) to hit some nice big fat bastard barra cos dagnammit they taste bloody tops.

If any perthy people group up for fishing trips be it local or even away'ish I'd love to tag along to learn from far more experienced people.

Welcome Pigdaddy, sounds like

Welcome Pigdaddy, sounds like you want to go everywhere & catch every species, always a good plan.

Best advice I can give you is to forget the kmart gear, it's cheap & nasty very rarely lasting for long if you fish hard or get into a few big fish. Go to a proper tacklestore (Oceanside is a great place to start) & spend a few extra bucks on better quality gear. You don't need to spend hundreds on each item but $150-$250 per outfit should get you gear that will handle decent fish & last for many years if looked after properly. If you already know you like fishing (which it seems you do) spending the extra on better quality gear now will save you money & heartbreak in the future.

Next bit of advice would be to fill out your profile. People will be more likely to offer you spots on trips if they can see a little bit about you, particularly your age & what area you live in.

welcome mate.

Take your time to choose your gear wisely. We are always discussing value for money topics on tackle here. I recon for around 180 to 300 You can pick yourself up an outfit/comnbo that will perform for years if looked after. I rarely fish the beaches but theres always invites to join crew on beach fishing nights.

my most expensive outfit is

Fri, 2012-07-27 11:21

my most expensive outfit is $180 and i can catch mackeral after mackeral on it no worries at all

if your just chasing whiting herring type stuff a $30 combo will do the job the only thing i look for really when buying whiting combos is a real with infinate anti reverse cause they are a pain in the ass when they start reversing on you

i caught a 15 kg shovely on my whiting gear and had to hold the crank handlw when it was pulling the drag out so it didnt go backwards what a pain in the ass

Iknow i probably get hounded

Fri, 2012-07-27 11:56

Iknow i probably get hounded for mentioning this store on here but bcf have some good combos on sale at the moment a 4000 size shimano reel amd 8ft catana rod for around $130.00. Plus diawa jupiter reels in 4000 size for $99.00. Just a suggestion. I await the barrage from the anti bcf brigade.

I Haven't been to oceanside as i'm north of the river but all the reports i hear are good or can't go wrong with any bluewater store.

I think BCF has great range,

I think BCF has great range, but their staff knowledge is lacking.  I have been going to campbells lately in leederville, great range, great advice.

Nothing wrong with bcf if you

Fri, 2012-07-27 13:22

Nothing wrong with bcf if you know what you want/need yourself, it's just the advice/service there that sucks. I only get out to Oceanside occasionaly because it's a bloody long way to go when I'm usually only going to spend $50 or so. I make the effort to go there for my more expensive purchases though. I'd love it if Oceanside opened a store NOR, thier prices are pretty good & thier advice/service is top notch, would be great to have one closer to me.
