Well we did it and I must say It was great Sorry no pics as I wasn't to sure what to expect the first time in at night so I didn't take it .viz was awsome 20m with the tourch.lots to see cobler blue devils were out in full colour.crays walking around munching the weed .no big fish but we were only in 5-10m of water .Jesse did find someones fishing rod and reel sitting on the bottom.got in the water 8:00 and out 70minutes later .would recomend it to anyone we will try the back off the three mile next time 20m and I will take the camera .I didn't think the tourches would light it up so much 10out off 10

do yourself a favour
and do a night diving course, there are things you should learn about before you go night diving espescialy down to 20m, it's very easy to become disoriented and you could get into trouble seriously.

I would be diving the edge
I would be diving the edge where reef meets sand ,anchor on the edge and set a line down with a strobe .Following the edge north or south and reverse will bring you back to your point of start .We had two boat and two groups off three divers .Your dive is only as safe as the dive plan .I would say we would do a couple more shallow dives before going out to far.And yes I will do a night dive course with Jesse when he is old enough. Thanks for you concern .

If you realy want to know
what it can be like should something go wrong with your torch, swim away from your mates and up a bit then turn off
your torch then see if you can tell where you are or which is up or down, it can be scary at times. the courses teach you how to navigate better too.

Those first few seconds of a night dive is pretty exciting you don't know what you are going to see or how much you will see with the torch,i still remember a prawn night dive which was my first chaseing prawns around Bicton,,i also remember running out of air on the bottom really engrossed in catching the prawns, lol, lucky my sisters was near by and had a spare reg,,
I remember doing a night dive as requirements to get Advanced (PADI) ticket,,all it was was a bunch of students crashing into each other and stirring up the silt off coombes st ,,what a nightmare that was,lol

What do you expect with padi
When I got my tickets (SSI) there was a padi instructor with a bunch of students down at rockingham beach he told them to bury their guages in the mud to get the depth reading to 18 metres or whatever it was

When i was diving i think we attached a white strobe flashing light on the back of the tank somewhere,,others had the big chemical glow lights attached somewhere, you can keep a spare somewhere to break and wave if you are in trouble,,(or to see if your torch fails which can be common in the cheapo torches)
