While I agree to some extent, he has already stated that he carried it out in NZ as he couldnt obtain the weapons in Australia.
I'll declare that I am a firearms owner, have shot and hunted since around 13 or so and still do regularly.
Im not proposing changes here at all, but it is clear that NZ needs to upgrade their firearms processes now.
Google Aramoana shooting for some context.
There seem to be such anomalies as while firearms with a magazine of greater than 10 rds centrefire or 15 .22 are illegal, it is not actually illegal to sell those mags, only to have them in a rifle.
AR15's are not a hunting weapon, despite being great fun to shoot.
It would be patently clear to anyone who handles firearms, that he couldnt have done what he did without that particular or similar weapon.
Even a .22 semi auto, while it certainly could wreak some damage, wouldnt have the stopping power to do that.
I grew up in NZ, and return regularly for visits.
Besides of course the human tragedy, it will be such a shock to a people who are very welcoming of strangers/visitors, and staunchly proud of their standing on the world stage.

Rabbits and foxes with a .22
Rabbits and foxes with a .22 or 12 gauge is the only ones for me.
Otherwise there isnt much, club shooting (practical rifle similar to practical pistol comp) there is some interest.
Frost you should probably edit that to "recreational hunter" as that may be more what you are asking.
I'll also make a prediction.
In 10 yrs or less, there will be a firearms category licence for a spear gun

But the "need" and "want" relate to many hazardous things in our lives.
High powered cars and boats, spear guns being probably the most relevant example.
You dont "need" a boat, and boats have been used on many occasions deliberately or without regard to injure or maim
I dont know of ANYBODY who "needs" a speargun, and it is lethal and a firearm.
Don't get me wrong, I am just pointing out things that you as a (I'm guessing) non shooter/hunter probably do not know nor are aware of.

Nonetheless as an unaware City boy can you provide me an example of where a rec shooter/hunter needs a semi auto besides the fact that it is more enjoyable to use just like a boat over a kayak or a high powered car over Dato or a speargun over a gidgee?

For me personally, I hunt rabbits regularly and come across foxes and cats as well which are alot harder to knock over with a .22LR (long rifle) and often require several shots at a longer range and sometimes moving.
Id rather stay with a .22LR but will probably upgrade to a .22 Mag which comes with quite a few disadvantages of increased noise, range, ricochet even after passing straight thru a rabbit.
Id much rather stay with a .22LR in a semi auto like a Ruger 10/22 to avoid all of that and be able to put 2 or 3 shots into a fox quickly.
For the city boy, a .22LR has a soft lead projectile which breaks up easily.
A .22 LR has a muzzle velocity of about 1300 feet per second
.22 magnum about 2000 and a copper jacketted projectile which is capable of passing through intact on a light boned rabbit.

.22 is like a pellet gun definitely no need for an ar15 In The hunting scenario it’s not. Sporting and the recoil will put ya aim out anyway

I would argue it's rare for somebody to pre meditate something that takes so long to act out.
They can change their laws but imo they'll only be policing the honest. I don't know any "bikes" but I'm sure they'd be the first port of call if you wanted to acquire an illegal firearm to act something like this out.

All I can say is I'm totally disgusted to live in the same country as the seemingly plethora of rednecks that pop out of the woodwork like cockroaches when something like this happens. The comments I'm seeing on soacial media are quite frankly rank. The only thing giving me a glimmer of hope for this place at the moment is the nearly one million signatures on Change.Org calling for F&^&*(head Anning's removal. It's garbage like him that fire up these scumbag radicals.

Are you forgetting the Bali bombing, 9/11, Charlie Hedbo, the killings in Nigeria of Christians on an almost weekly basis? It does not take rocket science to see that this incident was fermenting well before Fraser Anning showed up so put away your pitchfork and understand that murder is murder not matter what side the perpetraters are from. If we really tried hard enough we could blame anyone from the Queen of England to Idi Amin for this tragedy but at the end of the day it was the Gunman alone and nobody else.

What a great tragedy
The ramifications from the tragedy will be felt for a very long time I think and those amongst us who fish and hunt will feel the aftermath the most.
The New Zealand prime minister has all ready made her intentions to make changes to the NZ gun laws very clear. Those legally, law abiding firearm owners in NZ are no doubt about to some radical changes to it's firearm laws.
To me the most frightening images to come from the scene of the horrific incident was the amount of police running around with (what one assumes) to be assault rifles capable of full automatic fire and clad in outfits that a full on infantry soldier would be proud to have at his disposal.
It is to their credit and training in fire control that there where no accidental discharges of the hard ware they where carrying.
When I see people all tooled up to the extent that the police are now adopting to attend incidents with firearms involved it makes me shake with trepidation as to what the risk factor to the general public is.
As to the need against the want with semi auto firearms, if you are going to be involved with the control of introduced vermin (read pigs,horses,donkeys goats camels)and you don't have a semi automatic large calibre weapon with a large magazine capacity, then don't even think about it, be you using chopper or a vehicle.

NZ introduces new gun laws
Predictably NZ announced new gun laws today banning semi-automatic firearms that are classified as military style semi-automatic firearms. Certainly not as far reaching as the Australia gun reform following the Port Arthur massacre.

The banning of semi autos is the first action that will for The immediate future keep the less radical anti gun group happy.
The more informed anti gun groups will no doubt be pushing for far greater restrictions. Let’s just wait and see what else comes down the pipe line.
