Ocean harvest off bunbury
Thought i would go for a look today off bunno to see if the crays were in. Few whites but mostly residentials. Bagged out in 9m for 2 dives so not all bad. Weather was shmicko so we ventured on to try get some whiting?. None of us took big bottom bashing rods so we persisted for a while and ende up with about 20 odd sandies, they wernt really on the chew so we thought bugger it and tied on heavier rigs and thought we woul hit a honey hole i found few weeks back for bangers, first drift ( no drift anchor ), we missed the mark by a fair way, second drift bang bang. Two in the boat and a third one was dropped by my bro in law. Big buck was 14.5kegs. So it was out with the scaling bag for the remainder of the whiting we hadnt used for bait and hm time it was. Seriously good fight from both dhus on the super light whiting outfits. Lines were crossed at one point and could even feel the death rattle traveling up the braid. Ohh well they must of been keen to come home with us, because 9 times out of 10 both fish would have been lost. Rods were both spooled with 15 pound braid.

15lb braid is perfect for dhus would hardly call it whitting braid
that its a quality bag of fish and crays.

Awsum catch with your whiting gear.
I just got back from a few days in Mandurah and because yesterday was so good in the morning, we decided to go out the cut and do some fishing offshore. Well we were in a pretty small tinny so just offshore was the call. I only had my Barra rod, a Curado loaded with 30Lb braid and a very small selection of hooks. I rigged up some 20Lb leader and we also cleaned up on the sandies. I hooked up on a ray and watched it slowly peel off all the line and the small amount of backing until the leader pinged. Getting smoked, although slowly, is not so uncommon with rays.
We headed a bit further offshore when the wind died off and i rigged up a live whiting and a small sinker to try for the dermersals. Rookie mistake coming as i forgot to upgrade the 20Lb leader.
When i got a good hit but failed to hook up i figured the bait gone. Pulled in and the whiting was in great shape with plenty of kick still in him. I cast back to the same spot and got smashed in a sec. The whiting must have only been 2-3m down. Well i then got completly smoked in 15sec. From hookup to completely spooled in seconds. The drag was set pretty light so i didnt snap the leader but getting hit so close to the top leads me to think there was some Palegics around. Or a very hungry Sambo..
Unfortunatly after upgrading the leader and resetting the drag i never hooked up again..:(
Basically i'm jelous of you pulling in an awsum Dhu on 15Lb gear while i was getting smoked on gear that should have done the job..

Spewen u didnt get to see the fish that were taken your baits. I agree i am stoked to have landed what i did on 15lb gear. Surely there aint to many dinkum demersal fishos out there pullen 14 keggas in on less than than that. Not targeted anyways. My jig outfit is 30lb thickness of 20 but i would say people are pulling them selves fishing lighter than 15lb for decent bangers???
