Just curious, can you use a PLB as a boat epirb?

I already have two for my boat, just wondering as i will need to get a PLB for ocean racing one day.

No. It doesn't count.

There are some small differences. I think EPIRBs need to be able to transmit constantly for a longer period of time. EPIRBs also can transmit while free floating, I think PLBs need to be held with the antenna out the water for them to work.

I bought a PLB recently just so I can keep one in my pocket at all times. I've heard too many stories of people saying their boat sunk before they could activate the EPIRB.

For when you fall overboard and watch your boat power away, you pull this out of your pocket and hit the "oh fu*k" button.

I wonder...

...how many retailers, without being prompted, will tell potential customers that PLB's don't meet the mandatory EPIRB requirements for boats? Not everyone will stand there and read the box...they will more likely rely on what the salesperson might be telling them...

A PLB is registered to a person and has a min battery life of 24 hrs whereas a Epirb is registered to a boat and has a min battery life of 48hrs. Legally a PLB can't be used in lieu of an Epirb on a boat, but is a good addition.

are not EPIRB's so they cannot be used in place of an EPIRB where an EPIRB is required by law, like on a boat. However thay can be used in addition to an EPIRB for reasons already stated above. PLB's are used mainly by remote workers, bush walkers and basically anyone working or travelling in remote areas. They have proven quite popular for 4x4 enthusiasts and beach fishermnen visiting remote areas.
