Octopus shelter pots

 Hi all,

Can someone point me in the right direction, of what the legal requirements are for making your own octopus shelter pots?

As the fisheries website doesn't seem to state what they are.

Cheers in advance for any info.

Site pretty plain and simple ( not). All I know you can have your cray pot Id on them. How many On line unsure ?. If you do make pots, blocked back end ( concrete) with small hole for drainage. Try go for 250 mm pvc pipe.about 800 mm long. Otherwise you will only get small ones. Now is the time to try. Better of speaking to a fisheries inspector direct. Not someone behind desk. Hope this helps in some way

Clarification on Octopus Shelter Pots

Thu, 2020-01-02 10:53

Octopus Shelter Pots

So went to Fisheries in Freo, and spoke to the Fisheries officer "Scott" i believe.

They had no hard copy info or anything online, but the following is what is only required:

1. Doesn't require any floats to comply or gear identification. (probably wil tag mine just so they could possibly be returned if lost)

2. Shelter Pots have to be opened ended to be classed as a pot.

3. Quantity of pots is unrestricted for shelter pots.

4. Not allowed to be baited.

5. No shelter pot colour requirements. (where as trigger traps have a requirement of not being green, reason unknown)

6. No construction requirements to size, design or materials used.

7. Requires Recreation fish boat licence to transport gear.

8. Abide by quota limits set out in current Recreational fishing rules.

trigger traps

descriptions in the 'ACT' only refer to trigger traps, there is no mention of shelter tubes/pots.

The 3 year trial of recreational trapping concludes in March 2020, as Johnny metions, you will only get a definitive answer from a person at Fisheries.

If it is a retreivable occy trap, I would be following the rules described here:
