Offshore fishing Kalbarri

 Hi Forum

I'm heading off to Kalbarri with a 6.3m boat in October. I have been up there with a tinny before and know about the dangers of the river mouth. I have read some old forums about offshore fishing there and was looking for some more info if possible. Hoping to fish for both demersals and pelagics weather permitting.

I would have thought the water temp in October would be too cold for pelagic's however recent reports indicate that it is still very much worth trolling a few lures:

I think offshore you can expect to catch all the usual sothern fish (Dhu's, pinks, baldies) and your in with a chance to get some of the northern species as well (coral trout, red emps etc). The wind will be luck of the draw but hopefully you will get a few chances to get out wide.

I am going to Kalbarri next week. It's not really a fishing trip but I am taking the boat. I've only ever been on a charter in kalbarri and it was excellent fishing. The boat is only a 5mtr so I don't plan on heading too far offshore but I'll post up a report if I do manage to get out fishing. That might give you some useful info.

Just a note: Subject to your travel dates, pretty sure the demersal ban apply's up to Kalbarri... So dhuies, pinkies etc are a no go from the 15th...

Thanks, look forward to hearing how you go, good luck.

There looks like some awsome ground about 40 miles south west of the river mouth, think its part of the abhrolos. Was hoping for some spots a bit closer though.

I just checked and that area 40 miles out does look very promising ! Probably a bit out of reach for me in my little 5 mtr swifty !

My plan is to search for ground only a mile or so from shore but will trek a few miles north or south depending on the wind. Have seen photo's of awesome fish with the land/cliffs very close in the background.

That mountain comes up to from 50m to 20m, wish I had a big 7 or 8 meter boat to have a look. Im the same as you hoping for something closer in.

Jeez, you 'd be keen going to Shallow Bank

Mon, 2017-08-28 16:16

from Kalbarri. If you go 30 mile out just south of west, you run into a big ridge which comes out to just over 20 fathoms  out of 30 fathoms. This is Marshall's Bank.  But I wouldn't go there in my current boat either.  Demersals up north have been pretty good, from what I have heard, Dhu have been plentiful. But watch the weather--we are starting to get summer strength southerlies here now, although it has been good the last few days.

I will have a look to see if I can find it on my charts, 30 miles is a decent hike, weather would need to be perfect for me to head that far. I really appreciate the info though, cheers

I have fished the Mashalls a few times, Beware you will be out of Radio range and best to have 2 boats, its a long way. My fishing mate says oil co were doing seismic testing out there a year or so ago and have wrecked the fish grounds. Not sure if it has recovered yet.

I spent several years working on seismic boats, a bit of noise as the boat passes over that may give the fish a brief fright but everything back to normal once the boat has passed by. We used to catch plenty of fish on the odd occasions we anchored up.

Can't see seismic survey affecting fishing grounds at all.

Yes, I haven't heard anything

Seismic surveying is just that, noise, given off in brief , albeit strongpulses into the seabed. Have heard of no issues, would have been a real stink if there was any damage, as it is also an important crayfishing area

Ground looks good on the charts. Only have one boat when I go so will give it a miss, maybe another time. Hopfully with the seismic surveying going on out there the fish swim in a bit closer :)
