old fuel

I am after some advice . I have a boat with in board fuel tanks, due to work i have not used it  only started it and ran the motor every month for 5 minutes.  Now the fuel in the tanks is 18 months old . I plan on removing the fuel next break . What is the best thing to do about the tanks leave them empty or what ? With the old fuel can i top up the car with it any advice would be appreciated.

Old fuel

Mate it is still old so i would NOT put it in the car. Think filters that will need changing, injectors that are blocked etc. Personally i dont even use old fuel in my lawnmower. Dispose of it at the tip/recyclers.

If you can find an inspection plate or fuel guage plate that is big enough to get your arm in then the best thing to do, while you have a chance, is remove the plate and clean it out with a rag/sponge. There will always be bits of debris in the bottom.

On one of my mates boats we couldnt get into the tank with our hands so we put 10L clean fuel in the empty tank, shook the shit out of the boat, tilted it as far as possible, and siphoned it from the corner with a garden hose. That got most of the crud out.

Remember to flush the fuel lines with new fuel before changing the filters.

Good luck.

18 month is getting out there for fuel age. You didn't mention the quantity, but even for a large quantity  I'd be cautious of consuming in car. I'd run through lawn mower at some mix ratio with newer fuel.

50 litres costs about $70 , you can soon rack that $ up replacing fuel filters and the like.

I found using the boat once a week helped remove the fuel haha. but yeh 18 months is too old.

When i bought my boat from US i was unsure how old it was so i just pumped all 150L out into containers, still lighting my bonfires with it haha

Not sure how much it costs but you have to pay to dispose of it properly.

What if you put some avgas in there to bring octane level up?
