One Week of Metro Kayak-fishing

Hi Everyone,

For the last week, my mate Kevin from over east joined me for a week long kayak fishing holiday, with the target to get into one of our big pink snapper. The first 5 days were spent kayaking around Cockburn sound, but the fish just didn't show.. Eventually we came across one school, but kevs 1st hookup busted off before he knew what happened... I did managed to find a few snapper over these days to keep him going, but it was seriously hard work. (with a 92cm 11kg+ my best for the week.)

40 hours of fishing for doughnuts was too much for Kev, so we gave up on cockburn sound and with a perfect weather forecast, we borrowed my old mans Riviera and headed to Rottnest for his last couple of days in Perth.

We arrived at lunchtime, setup the kayaks and headed out. I trolled an 8m+ RMG for most of the afternoon, which was smashed every 10 mins by a handful of 60cm+ snapper, midsized Sambos, and at the end of the day, a stripy TUNA!  Also, between trolling, we hooked into a couple of Dhufish on SP’s. But Kevin was still not having any luck on the snapper front...

The next day, I hooked up Kevin with my spare 8m+ RMG to troll around, and soon enough he was getting into the fish!...At about lunchtime, the water glassed off and my lure was smashed by a solid 85cm snapper… Soon after landing this fish, I put him on top of the school, which he dropped down a sp and somehow pulled a very decent sambo out of it. Funny thing was, before I had a chance to get a snap of this fish, he released it, saying 'dont worry... ill catch a bigger one' ... im thinking, 'yeh right'

Not long after, trolling again, i turn around to see Kevin hooked up on something very very solid. 20 mins watching an epic battle, up comes the biggest fish I've seen landed on a kayak (in person). A monster Samson Fish of around 30kg+ trolled up on a HB lure… The smile on his face says it all and what a way to end his holiday, with Kev taking out the biggest fish of the week in our last 2 hours of fishing.

It would worry me a bit with big sharks around. Been out in the yak at dusk and it crossed my mind if they eat Kayak.

That Sambo must have given your mate a bit of shake rattle roll during the fight. Nice work!
