The ones that got away..

Their was an article about this in a Western Angler mag last year sometime and i found it to be a very interesting read. I thought it might be fun to involve members of FW in telling their stories of "the ones that got away..". I can remember countless times trying to lift a big Mackerel or Tuna into the boat, due to not having a gaff only for the leader to snap or for the hooks to pull. I really hope this one gets off the ground and members will happily share their stories.

So cmon, lets hear it.

Here goes me..

Wed, 2009-03-11 13:18

It was a late arvo sesh at one of my favourite rock walls along the Quobba coast that was my most memorable and a memory which will stay with me forever. I had been throwing smallish lures from the rocks for about an hour or so with a couple of sightings and a bust off. I was beginning to have doubts about the spot as I lazily clipped on a Halco Crazy Deep for a bit of a laugh. 1st cast threw it out, retrieved, hurled it out again. Within seconds of it hitting the water I had done about half a turn on the handle when I saw this HUGE spaniard leap out of the water, at least 20kg of solid fish!, entire body in the air and land, mouth wide open on my lure! I nearly fell over by this point. “Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz” I was hooked up big time as this monster headed for the horizon at a million tail beats a second, non stop with increasing drag until I got down to the last few wraps on my spool when I locked up. As soon as I did this, snap goes the line, “fn hell!”. I began the retrieve of just about my entire spool of 15kg mono on my 850, still coming to terms with what had just happened. Returned the next day to land my biggest ever Tailor @ around 90cm Laughing

Something I won't forget anytime soon.

Who's next..?

Cheers

"holy sh!t, did you see that?"

When I was a younger lad living on the northern beaches

Wed, 2009-03-11 17:14

in Sydney I took a young relo of mine fishing off the local rocks. It was one of the flatest days I can ever remember. No wind, no swell, so pretty hopeless for rock fishing. But it was okay for the young guy as we put him onto some rock cods and he caught a few fish.
Anyway I was standing on a rock ledge when I saw this school of yellow tailed kingfish swim by. The only rod we had with us was a kids set-up. I grabbed a "wonder wobbler" lure and threw it in front of the school - which were literally at our feet - and incredily one of the kingies turned and grabbed it. It took off at 100 miles an hour, putting a massive bend in the cheapo kids rod. Unfortunately that rod wouldn't take much bending and it soon snapped in half. You should have seen the youngsters face when I gave him his rod back in 2 pieces.
He was much happier when I brought him a better outfit.

I had one from last

Wed, 2009-03-11 17:41

I had one from last night.

I was down at my favorite spot in East Freo and was fishing for whiting.

A boat was coming down where i hwas fishing so i started to quickly wind in my line.  Next thing i know my rod just bent like buggery so i just continued to reel it in.  I was thinking shit this is putting up a pretty good fight wonder what it is.  when it got near me and to the surface it was a massive flatty.  It was around 50 cm long and had this massive head.  My wife couldnt believe the size of it and then i was trying relax and try to get it up.  This bugger put up the biggest fight and next thing you know my bloody line snapped.  I tell you the expletives that came out of my mouth would have embarressed a sailor.  We proceded to throw our lines in and my wife was 6 whiting up and i was sad and dejected from losing the flatty.

my wife just laughed at me and proceeded to tell me who caught the most fish.

she might be lucky to go again. :-)

I need my fix.  Hand me my line, I'm going fishing

Night fishing on a beach in

Wed, 2009-03-11 17:53

Night fishing on a beach in Auckland NZ.  First shark fishing trip, fishing off a rock into 12 metres of water.  We put out our mackeral baits and a couple bags of berley, after 10 mins both rods slowly took off, we rushed around to get on the harnes and picked up the rod.  By this point the shark was on the surface eating the berley bag.  About 10-12' long bronzie.  As it swam off we set the hooks on one of the rods and it ripped off line,, straight around a rock and the line snapped like cotton...my first trip in NZ and i went home gutted!!LOL

A few years ago i was

Wed, 2009-03-11 18:56

A few years ago i was working nights and me and a mate were keen to chase salmon so i finished a nights work and hopped into the car picked up a mate for the drive down to dungsbourough got there about 10am looked at bunkers and decided to go sugar loaf rock and fish inside it hadnt seen any salmon about 11am noticed a school of dolphins comming in from the horizon porposing in like a wave thought this was pretty special so threw poppers at them as they came the nearer to the rocks i realized they were hearding up a footy feild size school of salmon up to us so down with the spin stick and picked up the bream rod put a gang on and a mullie and tossed it into the school now that thick fish were actually suspended out of the water on top of each other no suprize i was instantly on and scared cause i could actuallt feel each fish hitting my 6lb line so as to no supprise it was only a matter of time till i was busted off. After the break off i actually walked around the rocks and picked up lots of salmon who had launched themselves on the rocks to escape the dolphins some alive to swim off but sadly some dead i think they were about 4/6kg if only i had a video cam i reckon i could have sold it to national geographic it was a truely amazing day even if i did drive 7hrs to fish for 4 only to go back to work that night

First Mulloway GONE!!!!! 26

First Mulloway GONE!!!!!

26 years ago after spending 2 and a half summers fishing 6 nights a week in the harbour watching everyone around me catch and land them and countless runs.I finally hooked and played to exhaustion (the fish and I) my first confirmed Kingie confirmed as it was floating about 50/60 metres out I started to pump and wind it in when we noticed a boat comming in we started to wave and carry on  trying to alert them to my line and fish ahead of them.It was a Police boat and they come closer to see what all the fuss was about needless to say what happened next PING.I hope there motor seized later as the prop wound the line and my fish into it.My luck changed after that night and never waited to long to finally get one up on the wharf.

As a young fella

Wed, 2009-03-11 22:40

growing up in Geraldton, the only time i would go fishing was when the old man worked on his yacht at the old marina Geraldton Sailing Club. One day i had a mulie out on a 100lb handline and it took off down the beach, i gave chase and pounced on it and was nearly pulled in!! I held on for about 2 minutes, which felt like 30!! It near on dragged me in before breaking of the gangs, i ran to the old man telling him about the monster fish that got away, and he smiled, chuckled and told me to go get the bastard!!

From that day on i was addicted...

Christmas Island....

Wed, 2009-03-11 22:54

...fishing off the rocks behind the police station, many times over a three month period. Soft plastics, 2 kg bream outfit, 10 kg bluefin trevally, sharp coral everywhere, again and again and again and again.....I wouldn't say they were "the ones that got away", it was more like "never had a chance in the first place"!

Not a monster but a 'one

Thu, 2009-03-12 08:09

Not a monster but a 'one that got away' none the less, and i remember almost every detail...

Was camping on the Warren with my dad and brothers, we had been there before and had heaps of fun catching Redfin from the canoe. Some very good size ones, plenty of them and theyd jump on almost any lure we threw at them.

For whatever reason there were none around this time, and we had managed only 2 average rainbows; well my dad and brother had caught them, so i was still longing for my first trout!

One morning i woke earlier than anyone else (i was still only about 13 or 14), it was cold, and the mist floated of the river into the surrounding trees, dead quiet, beautiful stuff. i took off in the canoe by myself with my favourite (only) rod; problem was the reel was half busted- the catch that stops it winding backwards had broken, so unless i was holding the handle, a fish could jsut swim off as if i had the bail arm open.

I began flicking lures around a deep hole next to a sandy bank, when the thought struck me 'i wonder if they would hang around the shallows waiting for insects etc?'.

sure enough, i cast along the bank, and half way back i ahd a strike and hooked up. I wound the fish to the boat and went to reach for the landing net... forgetting about the busted real, when i looked back the fish was swimming off again. winded back in, had to take my hand off the reel to grab the net, again he swims away. about the third time i get him alongside the canoe and awkwardly try to hold the rod and stop the reel moving backwards as i grab the net...start guiding the fish into the net, success in grasp. The damn fish jumped! practically straight over the net, the hooks pull and he almost teases me, lingering for a second before slowly cruising away.

i think the reel still sits in the grage, covered in dust and VERY unloved.
