Gday,
As some of you may have read my plans to put my old outboard on my boat didnt work out as planned, and with abit of time to think i have decided to spend abit of time and money investing in a new or near new outboard in the 80 to 100hp bracket just chasing abit of food for thourght on makes/models 2stroke /4stroke? I have never had a new motor before so any info would be great.
cheers

I heard there was a class
I heard there was a class action against yammy because there was so many problems with them. I have a Suzuki 90 4 stroke absolutely beautiful motor.smooth very quite and no fumes.it's about 2 yrs old and so far so good.

Hearsay
Hearsay doesn't count for much. Only class action i'm aware of involves Yamaha Rhino ATV's and people tipping them.
Great outboards!

Outboards
I have a 175 Mercury Optimax, and had a 115 Optimax prior to that, and if I upgrade, a Opti will be on the back of my next boat as well. I've had years of trouble free, economical boating with them!!

I got a 90hp 2 stroke Yammy
I got a 90hp 2 stroke Yammy and cant fault it............... granted they are noisier than the 4 strokes, but when you are fishing they all sound the same

Sea-kem you honestly would
Sea-kem you honestly would have to be kidding. Seriously on what or were did you hear that news?
There was a 80 4 stroke yamaha advertised in the weekends paper just gone. Not sure on details but was about $6000 from memory.
Rockingham boating center advertise motors a fare bit, as do Saltwater marine.
No issue with buying second hand but just do your homework first. Check what it came of, make sure it wasn't underpowered or worked to hard on its former boat or owner. Check it hasn't lived in the water full time. If it has just check the relevant parts for corrosion.
Lastly always get a full written price for everything included.

No I'm not kidding mate, and
No I'm not kidding mate, and i'm fairly sure that i read about it on this site. Why would I make something like that up? I'll stand corrrected. I personally know a guy with a yammy roughly 6months old and the startermotor shat itself lucky someone was around to help 20ks out to sea. Now that's what I call reliabillity.....

Seriously one starter motor
Seriously one starter motor is the best you've got. And you read it somewhere.
Not picking a fight but maybe you shouldn't repeat inaccurate or unsubstantiated truths..

Yamaha
Dont want to turn this into a one sided yamaha thread but..... Currently running two 2stroke yamahas one is brand new 30hp still running it in tho so early days but no issues yet.
Other is a 2003 70hp purchased with 150 hours on it, bought 5 years ago. Currently on around 700 hours. always been regualrly serviced never had an issue and still starts instantly first time, every time and runs as good as the day i got it.
I reckon just do plenty of homework and listen to peoples expiriences. All brands have motors that go on to last the test of time and all brands u would think would have duds come of their production line.
What ever u chose just make sure its looked after and regularly serviced and it'll look after u.

all you have to do is
all you have to do is mention yammys and its 1 sided who would insuld the yammys by mentioning another manufacturer as better (this is a comment intended not to offend and be seen meerly as a good joke)

under 100HP I would be hard
under 100HP I would be hard pressed to get a four stroke. More weight and less power for HP rating generally. Had a 115 etec that was flawless and would not hesitate to get the 90. Bigger motors is a bit different, as the weight factor becomes less as an overall % of weight on the boat. I say pick your poison and track down the best deal. In reality I don't think any of them are really better/worse. Yammie had/have a great finance deal at present, but if you are paying cash not so much of a biggie.

Black Anchor
Was on a Frazer 6m that I had at the time and about six months after I bought her the brown band 115hp that was on the back started giving me grief.
Wouldn't run above 2500 rpm without breaking down.
I had several people look at it for me over the next few months ,each with their own theory on what needed to be replaced ........I lost faith in the outboard and put the 200 Yamaha on the back of it instead .
Had a great run with that until I sold her in 2000.
Never liked anything black since . haha

Black anchors
I've always bought new, and despite some very minor "teething problems", they have served me well.[none of which required a tow]

personal choice
Ferret , its personal choice on motors, i have owned 12 boats in 16 years every one had a different motor and every one had its issues and good points , some more than others, you will hear good reports and the bad ones , do the research and listen to every comments only from guys who will tell you the truth about their motors not bullshit, most name brands these days will keep your rig going for a long time , but this will depend on how you use it and maintain it, shit happens occasionaly to everyone and then it needs fixing, getting it fixed properly by a good dealer etc will be the next issue and how much you pay.
Modern 2 strokes have all of their good points and smell of oil in general, 4 strokes heavier and slower of the mark, try going out on other boats to make your choice and then it will always get done to how much your willing to pay.

As per all threads about
As per all threads about outboards its ended up as ford vs Holden again.
I may be responsible for some of this because of my comments but honestly i was just simply pointing out something that was completely wrong for the purpose of giving correct info.
Its true i'm a Yamaha man but i think the thread was about second hand motors so there in lie's your biggest hurdle. You don't always get a choice of what you want second hand. Sometimes you have to get what is being dealt up at the time.
My input should be that there is nothing wrong with second hand engines. Hell i would struggle to buy new myself. Get things checked out and you'll save thousands.
I actually own a 75 hp merc about a 1995 model and other than the fact that is not a Yamaha i can't complain.
As for saying black anchors i really think 20 year old outboards don't really count when we are talking newer technology. Up to the last 10 years or so thing s are much more comparative between brands. Other than a few inherant issues that some companies had that we all learn to live with or disconnect or just plain put up with the negatives.

ETEC
Have a look at an Etec, very economical, quiet running and heaps of power low down to get you over the hump on take off. I have a 60hp Etec with 300 hrs fitted to an all 4mm plate ali and on a days fishing at the islands cover around 80-90nm for under 50 litres cruising on 4-4500rpm =18-21knots.
If I had to replace it , it would definitely be another Etec.
Have had experience with nearly all brands and sizes up to 150hp outboards over the year5s and this IMO beats them all.
