Opinions/advice on trailcraft Trailblazer 580
Submitted by Josh on Wed, 2014-01-15 20:17
Hi guys Looking at a Trailblazer 580
Price is about 20k
Single owner
Built in 2000
Trailer has some rust
115 mec 2 St with 970 hours
Anybody had one? Been on one?
Recomend? Steer clear? II'm a little concerned with the hours, but doesn't mean it's a bad motor. It's also at the top of my budget. Looking for something to fish Upto 4, sleep a couple on the deck
Cheers

My mates dad has one, with a 2 stroke 135. 115 is a bit small but probably OK but will struggle when loaded.
Solid boat, harsh ride but if trimmed it is acceptable. Good first boat.
Offer then 16k and see how you go.

As above RE John
Plenty of boats at good prices on the market so offer less considering its got a 2 stroke.

I had one also with a Yam
I had one also with a Yam F115 4 stroke.
Loved the boat, unlimited range (250 litres) tough and don't need to worry about marking it.
Did many Abrolhos trips with 2 or 3 of my kids.
Downside-as John said harsh ride but VERY stable and while we did more than a couple of runs home in 20-30 knots breeze, I never felt the slightest hint of pushing it past its limits. My back did though at times.
Seriously the boat will handle far more than you and for $16-$20 its a good deal, I sold mine for $32K a year back but with an anchor winch etc.
115hp-mine was great (20kts@4000rpm, 32@6000)but loaded up with 3 blokes, 250 fuel, eskys, water, dive gear etc it was a serious load it would still plane easily but with another 400rpm

Wow, 32 knots with a 115
Wow, 32 knots with a 115 yammie 4 stroke......115 2 stroke should be fine then. I stand corrected.
As Rob said, Trailies are not fancy, but they are solid, reliable and a great stable platform.

sorry just rechecked and it
sorry just rechecked and it was just on 30 lightship-gets faster everytime i remember
Mine was rated to 200hp and it would have been terrifying at that-they arent a high speed hull!

Sorry this should be on your other post but anyhow
Had trailcrafts before good tough boat but get slapped around in chop
Also had a voyager before with a 115hp yam 4 stroke and was probably the best out of 7 boats that I've had. Paid 16k for it with 800 hours. Max was 34 knots

I know you said aluminium but so did I at the time and ended up with this model! Maybe a bit of TLC needed as with most things.

Good luck mate

trailcraft
Hi Josh my mate recently bought a brand new trailblazer 590 with a 115 merc 4 stroke. at full WOT with 3 people and calm conditions it max's out at 25 knots, with a 4 stroke its not ideal to be sitting on WOT for long periods but with the trailcraft hulls 16-20knots would be the avergae cruising speed as with most aliminuim boats that size.
With the one you are looking at I think if the motor runs well and your happy with 2 stroke then thats not a bad price, if your handy you can do a bit of work to the trailor yourself, any 2nd hand boat you should be looking at wheel bearings etc straight away. Fishing 4 people out of a boat that size unless your anchored up chasing some herringetc is a bit difficult but thats up to you.
That second boat bruce recommended is very similar to mine except mine has had a few modifications done to the transom and layout by the previous owner. If your interested in that one here is my 2 cents, Firstly I can 100% guarantee you that westerberg is not a 1997 hull. That one was definately made before the 90's as they changed the design on the front of the hull as they were getting a bit of water over the nose. So unless you fit a clear across the front and sides of that bimini you will get wet in rough conditions buit it looks like it needs a bit of TLC and at 15k or whatever you get it down to you can spend a bit if you want. For any westerberg the manufacture month and year is stamped at the front of the boat where you hook your trailor winch on. No problem with it being an older hull mine is 20 years old no cracks in welds or any dramas, they are built more like a commercial grade boat than a rec boat
Dont be put off by the size of that motor on the westerberg mine has a 90hp 4 stroke johnson/suzuki and I can get 34 knots WOT which is way too fast IMO it gets pretty skittish at that speed. Westerbergs were generally built out of 5-6mm ali all around so you are getting a very sturdy boat which will leave a trailcraft for dead in heavy seas and are alot more stable thats for sure. That trailcraft will weigh hull only about 600kg, the westy will be over a tonne. Sea trial anything you buy you will see the difference in alot of boats
good luck with the looking

the 580 has 5mm bottom and on
the 580 has 5mm bottom and on the trailer completely empty of fuel came in at 1520kg on the weighbridge, so id estimate a fair bit more than 600kg hull weight?

thats the exact one my mate bought just remember that is without a 200kg? motor and 100l fuel
They dont has as much metal in them as some boats, but my mate got that brand new 50k with absolutely evrything ready to go which was a pretty sweet deal 5 year warranty I think

that is the 590, current
that is the 590, current model.
The one in question (2000 model)and similar to mine was the 580 and had 5/4mm and also has a 250L tank and 200hp rating.I put a fitting in mine thru the bottom.
They also, like many during the 2000's adjusted how they measured the lengths to compete with Quintrex etc so the actual designation is different and the 590/580 is unrelated
Westerbergs are without doubt strong boats and well made.
Hull weight 745kg according to the review below
http://www.boatpoint.com.au/reviews/2002/trailcraft/trailcraft-5800-trailblazer-9285
Note Josh-could easily swag 3 adults on deck but the cuddy was impractical to sleep anyone other than kids in.

yeah ok, looks like they have trimmed a bit of metal out of them over the years Rob
I am still pretty sure my mates new one has a 5mm bottom and 4mm sides.
Point of note with trailcraft I have been in forum member Uncles and also a mate of mines that are older possibly early 90's hulls around 5.2m and I reckon they ride better than the current model and are definately a heavier boat just without the stylish cureves of the new ones (they look great)

Had a 470 freestyle before
Had a 470 freestyle before and I've got a 640 trailblazer now, it had a 135 2 stroke merc with similar hours. Max speed on glass off day with 3 ppl was 34knots but cruise usually around 22knots loaded up. 115 would probably be fine for a 580,have Since upgraded the motor to a 225 4 stroke for economy and extra power.
Can ride a bit rough as others have said but you get a good solid plate Ali boat. It is a good bang for your buck boat with plenty of deck space. It is an Ideal fishing/diving boat
Get the Motor checked out and offer a few grand less, would not be a bad deal and You get a lot of boat for under 20k!

good fishing boat
I tested a 570 trailblazer about 5 years ago when I was looking for a new boat, love the layout and heaps of fishing room with a good cuddy cab. I just couldn't handle the harsh ride and ended up getting a glass boat. That one looks like good value the motor will be a bit thirsty compared to a 4 stroke but you could re power it in a couple of years if you wanted. There is good and bad with every boat so best bet is take it for a test drive and see what you think.

6.10 Trailcraft centre cab,
6.10 Trailcraft centre cab, with 150 4st stroke Yammy has pulled 41kn on a flat river trimmed way out. Doesn't give you much steering at that speed!
I actually fish.
