Which outboard
Submitted by Geespot on Tue, 2014-01-14 14:30
Hi there just seeking some advice on which outboard to get I am looking at either a 225hp optimax or a 225hp Suzuki. It will be going on the back of a 19ft center console and the way I drive is as fast as conditions allow and I don't worry about getting wet.

Go the Suzuki, 4 strokes are a much better engine imo. In general 4 strokes start better, use less fuel, quieter, more reliable but do cost more initially.

Got a 225 Zuk, love it!
Got a 225 Zuk, love it! Plenty of power, super quiet plus is the most economical in its class.
Cant go wrong.. Heard the opti's still chew a bit and aren't that quiet In comparison. Don't think you will find many with a bad word to say about suzuki!

How did you choose those
How did you choose those particular outboards as your 2 options? They arent really what you'd call similar genres, there are other excellent options between those 2 ends of the spectrum.
The new 200hp Yam 4 cyl is a lot lighter depending on the transom weight your smallish 19 footer can cope with?

It's not your option but
It's not your option but Yamaha are best the 4 strokes going. However, with your options I would go the Suzuki 4 stroke, bare in mind no 4 strokes are made to go flat stick.

If you plan on selling the
If you plan on selling the boat in the next 5 years or so then the suzuki will be much better resale value. No one wants to buy a second hand 2 stroke.
The optimax will be give better acceleration and performance. It is 40kg lighter so the boat should have a higher top speed with it too.
Fuel efficiency would be pretty close between the two. The fact that your lugging extra weight around with the 4 stroke would probably balance out any fuel savings you would make. However the optimax needs the quicksilver oil which adds to the running cost.
As far as reliability goes I think most of the new engines are pretty good. As a rec fisher it's pretty hard to clock up enough hours to actually burn a motor out. However 4 strokes will generally last more hours.
Does your boat have a transom weight limit and would the suzuki be getting close to that limit? You might need to think about how the weight would affect the boats handling.

In that choice
The Suzi all the way, but as mentioned above its not a racing engine. If you are after hole shot and flat out WOT then a 2S or even consider an ETEC. I went for the Etec purely because it was available and I do like the sudden choice of power for certain situations, but overall cant and wont get into an arguement between ETEC technology and 4S.

Double check ratings
Sounds way over powered, I have a 19ft glass boat with cabin and max rating is 150hp, sounds like it will be unbalanced

Suzuki
Have a Suzuki and cant fault it.
Mate has equivalent Opti and I was surprised on fuel consumption as it was good but much louder and oil is $$.
Really comes down to purchase price but if you want to offload motor then re-sale will be pivotal in the decision

The reason I picked these
The reason I picked these two motors is I believe they are at the top of their classes. I am leaning towards the opti. Hp rating for my boat will be over 250 and the boat will handle it no worries .Thanks for the replies.

opti
the opti could possibly be more, my mate has a 200 and his cost alot more to service than my 4 stroke suzi/johno

Just put the new series 225 Yammie on mine
6.8 metre - added 50kg in weight and actually makes the boat ride better and track much much straighter - wot is ridiculous at in excess of 40knots NB the dealer took it to that speed, I would never consider it normally and no cavitation whatever during test even at that speed
Run in now and getting better than twice the fuel economy of my old two stroke making trips out really cheap
This is the latest model which is 50kg lighter than the older series 200 Yammie
Cannot fault it yet !

Love the sound when you put the throttle down and no sound when you idle
Just a good motor

Suzi owners
To the suzuki owners with high hours how do use your motor mostly. Do you Run WOT in till you get to your ground or just cruise watching sounder?

FYI, a 4 stroke will use as much fuel at WOT than a carby 2 stroke at WOT of the same hp.

You will have a much lower fuel consumption on the 4 stroke, plus add oil to the running co$t.
I've had plenty of both 4 strokes (including Suzuki), as well as 2 strokes (I now have a 4 year old yamaha 2 stroke). If it were up to me to decide between the 2, any 4 stroke would win, and Suzuki would win that debate hands down.

Agree 100% but to add any of
Agree 100% but to add any of the midrange 4s jap outboards such as the yam F150 and F115, Suz DF90 upwards are solid long term proven (not new designs) engineering which suprisingly are still fully competitive despite being designed 10-15 years ago.
Id have any of them without hesitation.
