Outboard Issues
Hey Fellas,
On my last fishing trip on the way back in I noticed the outboard lose torque twice but it wasn't enough to be a real concern as it kept firing along nicely straight after and didn't worry about it.
Yesterday I went out and did 30nm without it missing a beat, but on the way back in (was running all day) it starting 'hiccuping' and anything over about 15 knots would see it have like mini fits. One of them was so bad that it started to gurgle and the whole outboard looked like it was about to fall off the back of the boat with shaking etc. After it stalled it started straight away again and ran for the next half an hour at full WOT with no issues. Getting closer to home it started again but a lot worse than before, couldn't get over 12 knots and was happening all the time, just cruising and then spit and spurt loss of power and then would keep going again.
The temperature was fine/water etc, split pin and prop all good. I haven't had a good look at the engine yet as I was more focused on getting back yesterday and have had to 'entertain' since then so haven't been able to check it out. I took some video on my phone yesterday to try and assist with the diagnosis. Don't worry about the angle of the video, just listen for the evidence. Second video is about 30 odd seconds in.
Will be booked in tomorrow (be a few weeks wait) but would be good to get an idea before going in.
Any help appreciated,
Adam

Is it possible that the tank
Is it possible that the tank breather is slightly blocked. My guess is a fuel issue. Check the fuel pick up. Seems to be starving of fuel or air. My bet is fuel stavation

Fuel again
Sounds like fuel starvation, either creating a vacuum in the tank, semi blocked filter or a partially blocked pick up.

primer bulb
Could possibly be a faulty primer bulb causing fuel starvation.
I had a similar problem where my motor is doing what your engine is but it was only happening occasionally. Whilst underway when the engine was playing up I got someone to pump the bulb which was "soft". Problem then disappeared.
After replacing the bulb the fault was gone.
Worth a try first before commiting to a workshop. ( Might save a few bucks.)
Good luck.

It just came to me. Had the same problem on the 50hp efi honda on my dinghy. Replaced the fuel line(between tank and engine including new primer). Could not find a leak but it was sucking air.

Yep
Definately Either fuel or air problem.
Could be gunk in your tank, filter, fuel line, etc, or (not as likely as a fuel problem) bad air or something blocking air intake

fuel bulb
I've got a 115 yamaha 4 stroke and suffered a problem not quite the same as you have in my cases the motor would just cut out for a half second then bounch back as good as gold for some minutes then repeat the cut out. turned out to be a very small tear where the fuel line joins the fuel bulb it was only when i took of the clamp joing the line to the bulb that it was discovered cut the bit of damaged hose off rejoined line to bulb hasn't missed a beat yet (8 months ago) just a suggestion to look in this area.
hope it's an easy fix for you

fuel or air
i would be looking at fuel supply , water in tank , do you have a seperator fitted adam and has it been drained ?
dont think it the prop bush because the motor would rev out to max when slipping , so back to looking at feul supply and filters including the one under the engine cowl good luck

Cheers
Cheers fellas, will look into it. The fuel tank is less than a year old so shouldnt be an issue there. Checked the breather and its not blocked. Fuel line seems like a good place to start, which would explain why its deteriorating, maybe when it gets on certain angles/position it is fine, then takes a bump and starts to choke. Otherwise filters will be next. Its due for a service, but would like to know for myself first so i get that trust back as when she stalled at the back of legendre i wasnt feeling so good with a 15+ s.wester starting to blow.

With most
Certainly when the engine "dances" like that its a fuel issue. Gets an small aount of fuel in, that doesnt combust, then a larger amount and you get the bigger bang, hence jumpy motor.
Saw you out on saturday. Did you also go out yesterday. Saw a boat under tow when we got back ~6.15pm.

nah
Nah I was sitting up the yacht club for lunch yesterday, (wasn't game to try my luck with the big girl) watched the sea rescue boat get put away at 1pm with the coppers on board and their little tender along side, wonder if it was a routine patrol or something else. Bloody hell it was busy out there yesterday, watched every ramp fill up non stop from 12:30 through til 14:00.

battery
Just went and checked through the filter and fuel lines which all seem good, as I was poking around a nut fell onto the floor next to my feet, had no idea where it came from. Thought I'd play around with my batts a bit and no1 was dead, bit more probing and the nut had come from the negative batt terms which were effectively loose and had free play. This might explain why it was fine for the 30 minutes in the middle of its spasms as we got inside the islands where it was calm, then started playing up again when we got into open water and would explain why the sounder/gps dropped out. Being a c/c it takes a fair bit of a beating, I haven't had to change the batts since owning her so figure it may have just worked itself free over time... Could just be a secondary issue though that was needed to be resolved.

Battery Connection
Just incase anyone else ever has a similar problem. My batteries are in a battery box, but that still doesn't protect them from bumps and jars etc. It seems like over time that the nut had just worn itself loose on the negative battery terminal and that everytime the boat went over a bump, it would cause a loss of power to the outboard as the connection was some what severed. It would have been ok as I have dual batts, but then again the stress of figuring out an issue whilst out yonder is never a pleasant one.
Serves as a bit of a reminder to give the boat a good check every so often, even the stuff you think isn't an issue when she's been running fine for as long as you can remember. Glad she's back in action now and working fine again (touch wood)

I had something similar
I had something similar happen to me,turned out that the bolt used for the earth had salt scale behind it.Motor would cut out when trimmed.Pulled the bolt out reset it no more probs that was 3 yrs ago.Took ages to figure out what it was tho,2 boat mechs and a auto electrician couldnt work it out.In the end found out by accident with the cover of the motor just happened to glance at it when started saw a puff of smoke and there it was.

if theres any crap
in the fuel tank that occasioanlly moves into the right position to block the fuel supply - as above stated, id connect a portable tank and see if the problem persists.
