soda blasting?
Submitted by mrwinta on Tue, 2012-10-09 18:02
I have a Trophy 2052 that has been Antifouled and it makes the boat look rubish and gets on everything including the cover and now it has got dirty black stains all up the side of the hull.... I want to remove it but after googling the process I can't tell if it would then have to be re-painted/ gel coated- am I being thick or can you just blast it off and away you go?
Does anyone on here do soda blasting? Maybe someone has had the antifoul on a trailer boat removed and can give me a bit on an insight into what needs to be done....
Thanks... Winta...

Probably if you do it, it
Probably if you do it, it will look a bit awful.
You can't really regelcoat the whole base of a boat, and you need to paint, and that looks pretty awful after a little while too.

Not cheap
Even in the states its the best part of $2k so I'd expect it to be $3k or so here. I was looking at a boat tht had bottom paint and after researching the soda blasting bailed on the idea. It can really mess up your hull and you need to know the person doin it is very experienced. Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear!

MR MUSCLE
How do i get anti fouling off ?
ANSWER: Cans of MR MUSCLE and lots of it.
I had a Haines 650f that was anti fouled. Was told to use Mr muscle and high pressure washer. JUST DONT DO IT ON TOP OF LAWN OR ANY OTHER WANTED PLANT LIFE !
Worked a treat. Took me a while though. I did it over a few months and got the lot of. (had about 3 old layers underneath the top coat). There were a few stubborn areas, only small, that i ended up sanding back and finishing of with 1800 wet & dry.
The thing was my anti fouling has a primer that the mr muscle wouldnt strip. But it still looked better, white primer vs crappy light blue anti fouling.
My advice, that is if your willing to put the time in, is get some cans from the shop (MUST BE THE CAUSTIC TYPE) and try a little bit on the transom, just to see what is under it.
Maybe its something that looks better. you can always just strip the whole transom and see what it looks like. Thats what i did and went from there.
I was told that the only thing that may stop you is whether or not the gelcoat has been etched. (process of removing the shine and roughing it up a bit so the anti fouling takes hold.). But a small sample on the transom should tell you.
If your interested, PM me your email and i can send some photos of the boat i did, before and after shots.
cheers
Kev
