my old boat had tyres on it that were 9 years old but it only got driven down around the corner to the ramp! if your planning a big trip your better off to spend a few dollars on new tyres than get them all blowing on your way up there
Alfred, 5 tyres including the spare.I was lucky we were travelling in convoy and the tyres on my mates trailer matched mine. After the spares blew we had to un hook the boat leave it on the side of the road drive to Gero where we took remaining tyres of mates trailer and left it on blocks, drive back to my boat replace tyres, drive back into Gero and wait at the tyre joint until he opened(all this started happenning at around 3 am). Finally at 0930am we were on our way to Shark Bay only $750 poorer.I remember it was a freezing morning and wouldnt wish it on anyone. There was an upside to it all tho we caught plenty of fish that trip and i had filled out my Lotto coupons befoere we left, after i got home checked the numbers and found i had won $1400 on the same night we blew all the tyres go figure someone was looking out for me,just that they had a twisted sense of humour.
UV perishes everything, keepem outa the sun when you can and youl get the most life from them, sun exposed tyres start to crack and this is the time to get rid of them. Our car is 7 years old and the spare was brand new and never seen daylight, I bought 3 new matching bridgies and used the spare, right as rain. Dont overload, dont overinflate, dont underinflate, dont buy cheap shit tyres
Haha, I didnt have any when I towed the tinny up to Kalbarri with tyres that were starting to crack, but had gone hard, had to take a detour route on the way home coz of the fires and ended up on a single width tarmac road with wide dirt shoulders that the left side copped when another car passed, not long after we were back on the hwy, sure enough the left trailer tyre blew. I did remember one part of my brain sayin change them before we left and the other sayin, nah, theres heaps of tread tho, what a waste, thats a few cartons of piss I can buy if I dont buy new ones.....
Yes you can, but the speed and distance your traveling make a huge difference as mentioned above . A 13inch tyre is doing a heap more rpms at 100km than your average car tyre, generates heat. Also if the trailer does not get a lot of use your tyres will get flat spots and on a long trip will end up with lumps where they have been sitting and will blow.
Change them. I must have hit a curve and thought I saw a bubble in the tyre. Because some off the trips up here arent short, thought I would go and check it out.
Tyro said shell be right, cant see a big egg in it. Now the tyre was almost brand new, front right on the twin axy trailer. Next trip to Dampier kapow. If this was a single I would have been screwed again.
Should have listened to my gut feeling. Now I have a motto, if in doubt change them, before any long trip service the hubs, buddy etc.
Light truck are the way to go. They have quit a bit more reinforcing than passenger tyres and Kumho are a very good brand. I was in the tyre game for nearly a decade and was always very impressed with them. Yes, five years is the max for any tyre whether it be housed or out in the open. If you look on the side of the tyre, there will be a number where the last four digits are the month and year the tyre was manufactured. ie. 0704 means it was made in July 2004 and so on.
Wish I had seen this post before driving from Albany to Karratha, 4 blown tyres in 2 days. The tyres looked good and had correct pressure but when I got the first one replaced the fitter told me they were 8 years old. OK for the short trips in Albany but as soon as the speed and heat built up they fell apart.
Not fun changing tyres in nearly 40 degrees on the side of the road with trucks flying past. also replaced them with light truck tyres

Light truck tyres are OK
Light truck tyres are OK Alfred, but you still need as many ply rating as you can afford. Tyres are one thing you cannot skimp on.
