I would find another spot. It might be "your" spot but not your part of the ocean. Everyone has the right to fish in any allowable part of the ocean. However, courtesy is always appreciated. If theres another boat when you arrive, simply fish elsewhere or a couple hundred metres away. Who knows, maybe the boat that's already there has marked that spot way before you considered it your spot.
I would sound around the area and hope for another patch of ground.
One day off Dampier, we headed out half way to Indonesia to one of our "proven" spots only to be robbed by the sharks. A quick look at the plotter showed another proven spot about 12 miles away. We made the decision to go there. As we got closer, we could see a boat in the general area. The closer we got, the more and more it looked like he was on "our" spot.
Bloody hell, just travelled 12 miles, on top of the previous 50, only to have another boat sitting on out target lump.
We gave him a bit of a wide berth and sounded around to find a half good patch of ground.
I'm sure the bloke on "our" spot thought we were pinging him!
Mount Williams is one of the landmarks we used to use to locate our spot before GPS days, all the old time fishermen used to call it the same thing.
Another set of land marks was the four sandhills just north of Myalup-----Mt Williams over the four hills and the tanks in the gap, but they have moved the tanks over twenty years back so you can forget that.
Like when the big orange and yellow Solo garage in Naval Base was a great landmark for lining up and that could be seen throughout Cockburn Sound and when that got removed, so did everyone's spots.
I was just thinking why it was that ifish out deep alot an thought I was missing something out there yes there is lots of ground there just a long run out

Just need to think what you
Just need to think what you would like if someone rocked up 50m away from you when went 46 miles away.
Alternatively, just shout abuse at him for being in 'your' spot.

theres likely someone on
theres likely someone on board who you know from taking out there before.
And he's likely hiding below the gunwhale sayin "f++k here comes John, hope he doesnt see me!"
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.
