Overhead reel

G'day everyone, I'm in the market to buy a overhead reel for jigging/bottom bouncing and trolling. Been looking at the shimano Torium and Daiwa saltist lever drag, does anyone have these reels and could give me feedback as to which might be the better way to go? Or if anyone else has any other recommendations I'd love to hear them. Cheers

i have the torium 16

the one in the link attached www.sneakyfisho.com/shimano-torium-16hg-overhead-reel.html  great reel holds 600m of pe 3 ( 50lb) which is way more then neccercy.

but the reel is amazing for the price of it i would rate it much better then the saltist i have landed sambos around the 23kg with this reel on a pe 5 jig rod  and the reel is great nice and light troll with it easy aswell great all rounder and i would just go with it over the saltist as its shimano so warrenty and service is much much better then daiwa. also at the moment that site in the link is doing 15% so its a bargin mate.

Thanks for that, I've found it for $211 on dinga.com.au so that might be the way to go! Cheers

 Saltist over the Torium for

Saltist over the Torium for me, had both and sold all my Toriums. Daiwas servicing reputation shouldn't matter, they're that simple you can do them yourself or send to any reel service center as it doesn't have magseal.

For bottom bouncing however I'd personally go with a lower geared lever drag reel. Better drag, more pulling power, and you won't strip the gears cranking lead up from the bottom

Never had a saltist, but have a torium. It's a bloody ripper. Bats way above its price. Wouldn't hesitate to get another

Not sure if they still make them but had a saltist BG 35h for quite a few years now, great all rounder and hasn't missed a beat.

I have both and certainly prefer the Saltish lever drag reels. Nothing wrong with the toriums, however having the added feature of a lever drag tops it for me. I mostly use mine for overhead beach fishing.
The Saltist Hyperspeed is fantastic for jigging. Has 7.2:1 gear ratio and super quick. Beats a Stella hands down.

not sure

you can really compare them as I is a stardrag and 1 a lever drag. Toriums are great and the 16 is narrow enough not to have to be anal about laying line on the spool. The comparison to the daiwa lever drag would be a tyrnos. I have a size 16 tyrnos that is a lever drag. It is a nice reel and I haven't had any issues with it. The only thing that took a bit to get used to was the constant clicker whilst winding as I hadn't had that before

After owning both save your money and get a talica. I have blown up two toriums and two saltsit reels. These reels are fine until an angry sambo comes to play then the anti reverse in both reels gives out. Literally another 70 dollars on a saltiest two speed and you can have a talica single speed and they are bullet proof. Have absolutely thrashed mine and it’s still performs every trip.

Cheers crew

I've always been a TLD and Tyrnos fan, mainly TLDs because they are cheap and nasty and can take a beating + catch good fish, but I used a mates Talica a while ago and fell in love...
