Overhead Reel - Talica
G'day Everyone
Im totally new to boat fishing and im after some advice on what reel size i should be looking at. I thought i'd give it a go and got myself a tinny its not big, about 3 metres so I can't imagine being able to go out very far. The only other boats i'd be fishing off would be the odd charter maybe once a year. The problem is im not even sure what depth i'd be fishing in or what species i'd be able to find as im still pretty inexperienced. I know pinkies and tailor are in the cards but are the bigger fellas like dhuies and sambos out of the question for a small boat? or even spanish macks?
I'm mainly going to use this reel for bottom fishing with big sinkers and a bit of trolling around Perth maybe even a couple of hours north or south if its worthwhile. Im intending to run 30-50lb braid with a wind-on mono leader to absorb the shock when trolling. I haven't got a rod yet and any input on that would be appreciated as well but i was hoping to get the reel sorted first. I'm after a light-ish combo so i'd feel like im getting trashed when a big one is hooked but at the same time i know im not under gunned at all, if that makes sense.
So i'm pretty much sold on the shimano Talica but not sure which size to get. Not sure if the 8 will cut it. Considered the 10 but have been told that wider spooled reels are a PITA to keep levelled or is it something that i'd eventually get used to. Had a look at the 12 but it seemed like an overkill. is it?
I'd love to hear from those of you with more experience bout the size and line capacity i should be going for. Or even better if you have previously owned a Talica. I have the mindset of buying decent gear and only buying once so I can't afford to make a mistake.
Thanks for reading,
Klaus

Decision is an 8 or 12
I have both an 8 and 12.
The choice will be what line class you want to fish, once you choose this I think your decision will be much easier.
I fish about 6kg at strike on the tac8 with 40lb(pe3) which I find perfect for almost any metro fishing besides the odd sambo that cannot be stopped.
I have the tac12 loaded with 80lb(pe6) and usually set this up at around 9-10kg at strike which I rarely use metro as its just not required.
My opinion would be to not bother with a talica 10, the 8 will have enough capacity to fish a braided line within the reels drag limits, if you want to go all out look at a jigging master reel. Small in size with huge drag capabilities, check them out and you will probably skip the talica's

As above
I have the talica 8 with pe 4 and a talica 12 with pe 6.
only need the talica 8 and it is amazing with huge power and light and huge spool capacity for its size.

Love my TAC 8, I fish 50lb on it and use it for jigging and bottom bouncing Reds etc up north, Caught a couple of big trevs on it and handled them with ease.

Just a passing thought would
Just a passing thought would the TAC8 be able to handle the odd trip up north or exmouth bottom fishing and possibly trolling?
Ricey and Triggy it sounds like your TAC8s are getting the most use, for metro anyway. I'd like to find out for what sort of fishing or species do you guys start pulling out the 12 instead of the 8.

Klaus- I have the 16 2spd and It is a brilliant reel-I bought to fish deep and handle all Jigging/bottom fishing applications-I fish PE6 and if anything its probably over kill for metro.
Have you got a rod to suit? if you do take it with you and work out what size is best matched to the Rod.
Cheers

Exmouth
On my last trip the talica 8 was my reel of preference, for both jigging and a bottom bounce. There are other reels as good as the talicas but the 8 is my preffered size.
If not fishing anymore than 50lb the 8 is ideal, i have only used the 12 for chasing a few sambos and winching up fish in exmouth trying to beat sharks

The two other reels I would
The two other reels I would consider in this range would be the Penn Torque and Daiwa Saltiga. The Saltiga Z30 is a brilliant reel but costs more. You can get the normal 20 size which is the same size as the Z30 with a few less items and the Torque is also awesome quality. You will not go wrong with all three so it could come down to a price thing. The daiwa reels mentioned though are star drags.
