paddle crabs, cane toads of the river
Submitted by quadfisher on Wed, 2012-11-07 18:07
Not sure if anyones seen this but some imported crabs have been found in the swan river
and by going by the fisheries website they are s---g bricks about it.
And so they should , god knows what effect they could have her, going by the n.z. experience.
If you go crabbing keep your eyes peeled , and maybe print off a picture of them to take with you.

Got crabs?
No sorry , just saw it this morning myself, surely they should be running ( they may) some
adverts in the fishing sections of local papers etc.
And of course , they must investagate how they got here etc, to stop them
arriving again, thats why we pay taxes isnt it.
Read the language in the poster again, this could kill the local crabbing so iconic
to W.A if not stopped.

AQIS has a lot to answer
This is another example of how government cut backs and AQIS not having a robust marine control program for international ships entering Australian waters. These types of marine pests (non-indigenous species) are transferred around the world by ballast water and attached to the side of ships. AQIS relaxed their regulations/inspections on international vessels and have recently been looking at revising the current regulations for more stringent ones. Darwin harbour had a infestation of Black stripped mussels several years ago which were transferred off a yacht, it cost many millions of dollars to eradicate and surveillance continues. If a crab like this gets established they will have a huge impact on our native species. The government should roll out an awareness program to the public ASAP.
Old fishermen never die they just smell that way.

I'm sure they found one
I'm sure they found one random one last year. By the sounds of it there must be a little colony setting up in the swan. Hope they can stop them establishing, especially if there not bloody edible!!!!

Far canal. There's always
Far canal. There's always something to spoil a good time. I see on the news tonight there have been prawns released into the river to boost stocks and they reckon by next year we can all go prawning again. Norman Moore admitted they didn't know why there has been a drop in prawn stock in the past ten years. So the question begs why would you throw a heap of prawns in for them to suffer the same fate as the rest? But part of me wants them to win as I would love to take the familiy prawning.

Paddle Crabs
No jetty rat, they are not included in your bag limit.
I thought my daughter got one a couple of months ago pulling the nets but it was a four lobed swimming crab that is native. They do look quite similar.

I read about this on another
I read about this on another website and thought I would share an idea from one of the commentor's :
"Maybe an opportunity for local dive clubs & divers to have a dedicated search day ore weekend & sweep the river. Perhaps business could get involved & put on a BBQ in support. Great chance for the community to get involved & unite in protecting our environment & native marine species. "
Not sure how feasible tha idea actually is... but it's certainly a good thought considering how serious an impact this crab could actually have.

And it is potentially very
And it is potentially very serious. If there's been multiple catches already, I believe it is quite likely that a viable population may have established already. It would be an indication that this species can survive in these conditions, reproduce and start competing for food with the natives. The more individuals that can be removed the better. The sooner the better.
At this point it is anyone's guess whether these foreigners are going to pose a problem. We're already past the prevention stage, they are here and need to go! The practical execution thereof is probably not so easy.

if you catch them keep them and hand them into fisheries ASAP.

yea, i reckon i caught one on a mulie at port beach a few weeks back, but i thought it was a sand crab, luckily i accidentaly killed it when it attacked me.( I was trying to scoop it up in a milk crate but i accidentaly crushed it)
Fishing and catching are two different things. But i want to learn how to catch.
