Hmmm, you don't snood the bottom hook?

Thu, 2018-03-08 12:55

Do you make your own twisted droppers or are they Rigmaster

Like you I always run a snooded two hook rig when using occy tentacles or squid and a three hook snood for the top rig with a mulie or wkw fillet

Spacing between loops

Needs to be sufficient to avoid the top and bottom r8gs hanging up on each other ......well that was what I was taught by a far better angler than me but there again I have reverted to three way swivels rather than twisted droppers though still have plenty of premodern ones in the tackle wallets

paternoster rig peg board

Thu, 2018-03-08 15:50

Hi Russ

Not sure if you have seen these before.

I have found these boards are quite handy for making rigs up. I made one up myself. Basically you set up all the spacings etc. on the jig and they all come out at the right size everytime.

Quite enjoy sitting back making rigs up with a quiet beer or 2.

See Link on you tube

 4/0 but the 3/0 would work .

4/0 but the 3/0 would work . found the 3/o was getting too many pickers being hooked up.

You can go as low as 2/0 hooks

Sat, 2018-03-10 11:03

When Ryan Thipthorp and I went out last weekend we were using paternoster rigs with snelled 2/0's to catch KGW's and the by catch of dhuies. We paired those hooks with small chunks of skinned occy and it worked like a treat.

Apart from the 16 KGW's and two Dhuies, we also hooked on to and lost 3 other good sized dhuies. Two were due to spat hooks and one that busted my 40lb leader under my first hook at the knot. As Ryan said afterwards, I would have been better off using 3 way swivels and 60 - 80 lb leader. But then again I am still learning from my mistakes and I make plenty of those, bugger it!

The other thing to note was that where I was using single hooks on my paternoster, Ryan was using snelled double hooks on his paternoster set up. This way there was a hook at each end of his bait ensuring a better hook up rate. As for me I was getting plenty of bites but failing to hook up as often. That changed when I started reducing the size of my chunk of bait.

we used to use the 2/0

Sat, 2018-03-10 11:12

we used to use the 2/0 snelled after getting advice from Ryan years back , just went with this size as thats what was in my tackle box and have stuck with them as they work. the bycatch of other fish is there as well . in 3 trips out to same areas we have got 4 dhuies , foxys, b/ass and numerous other species. however i have just gone to heavier line as Sandy got busted off last trip out by what we think was a big dhuie . gone from 40lb to 60lb and a slightly heavier gague hook but still the 4/0.

i have in the past nailed a 8kg dhuie on the 2/0 snelled so definately possible
