PENN 8500SS

I have a penn 8500ss and was wondering if any of you tackle gurus can help me out. Would this reel be capable of taking 50lbs braid and holding upto some sambo jigging i have only ever used it from shore on salmon etc. Any help would be much appreciated

Yes it can handle it but not often and you must have the ratchet on as its the other anti-reverse pawl. Ideally its a 10kg reel becoz of its anti-reverse system and teflon spacers in the spool.

If its gonna be a once or twice a yr thing then its fine but ideally go for a more modern reel. Dont forget the SS are discontinued and there's only so much spare parts available.

You sure the anti reverse mechanism will be unavailable in the future??? Me thinks everyone with an 8500ss should buy a spare or two.

I use an 8500ss with 15kg line for jigging. Use it as an allrounder for mates i take out who dont have gear. Have caught plenty of sambos without a drama.
