Peoples thoughts on catching Pink Snapper in the sound this time of year!

are you allowed to catch and release big pinks in the sound when the ban is on??

wouldnt mind heading out, catching some squid and whitting then having a snapper bash!

will this put too much stress on the spawnnig snapper? (surely not).

cheers for your thoughts.

You could get busted if fisheries pulled you up just for having your bottom bouncing gear rigged up. Dont try the 'i was just chasing sharks' line either theyve heard it all before.

Wouldn't target them personally ...not sure if it's illegal though...I caught 2 sharks yesterday on bottom rigs could easily have been snaps which I would've released..

You can lift pinks into the boat mate, just dont keep em there. Better to take the time to pull the hook out than leave it in.

Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds – closed season,
1 October – 31 January (inclusive)
Cockburn Sound is the site of the largest known aggregations of pink snapper in the West Coast region and is thought to be critical to the maintenance of adequate breeding stocks of these long-lived and slow-growing fish.
It is illegal to be in possession of pink snapper while fishing in the waters of Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds during the closed season. However, pink snapper taken outside the Sounds
may be transported through, and landed within, Cockburn and Warnbro Sound during the closed season.

I was down at the baot show talking to the fisheries guys , and they said that they could fine me just for having a paternoster dropper rig on my rod, if they suspected i was fishing for snapper, or demersals.

That's a bit of a grey area.

Thu, 2012-10-18 10:10

That's a bit of a grey area. The term "fishing for" is not defined withing the regulations, so unless that point has been ruled on previously, and chances it has, you may have a chance of argueing it in court. Though it would be an expensive argument.

I think the fisheries view is "If they susspect you of fishing for demersals, and you have a heavy bottom rig set up" Then they will book you and you can argue the point in court.

Personaly, I prefer to keep out of the "Grey Zone".

Thu, 2012-10-18 12:25

while it is a bit of a grey area, Id tend to think a judge who is dealing with rapes murders and drug dealers everyday would possibly be a bit annoyed at dragging someone in for tying a fish hook the wrong way.

Not a comment on actually fishing for them, but to do with "carrying a paternoster rig" if I was genuine I think Id call their bluff.

Fisheries do a great job but they ARENT god either.

for kg's and skip's ...same setup as for snapper with fresh squid and on 6/0's circles ...suppose could downsize hooks and leader that'd be about it...don't want dramas ( I hate grey areas )

different courts

Would be dealt with in different courts Rob.  But yes, it would come down to intent and how that can be proved.  What style of gear and equipment is used would help determine that, but yes, pretty finicky really.

Cockburn Sound Snapper!

Thu, 2012-10-18 23:09

"catch and release" of Pink Snapper in Cockburn Sound isnt allowed!

Disrupting and accidental killing of spawning snapper isnt a good practice!

Fisheries know where mulloway are caught and "most" shallow water snapper spots dont hold mulla!!!

If your chasing bait at snapper spots no worries but people are watching if your fishing from sundown to high tide!!!!!!!

I've been tagging 3-4 nights a week of late and compliance has been very good (thanks to the majority ) but "just a few" are doing the wrong thing (no excuses) but after a few phone calls to Fisheries they are out and about sorting them out

I totally agree with the gist

Thu, 2012-10-18 23:22

I totally agree with the gist here, of targetting catch and release snapper etc.

But just cos "Fisheries know where mulloway are caught", I just dont see how they could possibly prosecute someone genuinely fishing for something else on a paternoster rig.

If they dont publish all the mulloway spots in the Government Gazette, how could a nooby (or someone who fishes occasionally) possibly know he is in the "wrong" spot, let alone be prosecuted for it.

As I said before-Fisheries do a great job, but they are NOT god.

What will they tell the judge?

"No your honour its not illegal to use that rig or fish in that spot, but we reckon he might have kept a snapper if he had the opportunity"

I just dont see how they could possibly prosecute someone genuinely fishing for something else on a paternoster rig.

They wouldnt prosecute they would "warn" the angler that was " catching and releasing pink snapper" and make them aware!

If they continued or had "prior' issues in the past it would be addressed!

The " Fisheries know where mulloway are caught and "most" shallow water snapper spots dont hold mulla!!!" comment was made as thats the excuse of a select few chasing pink snapper in Cockburn Sound in 5-12m of water during the ban
