Perth Mackerel Advice

People of Fishwrecked, I was hoping someone could provide me some advice and guidance.

I have decided that my target species for this coming summer will be Mackerel. Given this I have done some research and found that water temperature is important (21 degrees), but apart from that I was hoping to get some further advice as to conditions that can swing the odds in my favour (Tide, Wind, Swell & time of day)

I have also looked at locations as I am going to be using a 5.5m plate ally boat, I am not keen to go too far. At this stage I am thinking The West End of Rottnest and over the 5 fathom bank, are these locations likely to produce Mackerel? are there any other locations I should giving a go? Also what should I be looking for in terms of ground, should I be fishing a steep dropoff or structure like that of the 5 Fathom bank?

In terms of tackle I have procured some teasers and have a selection trolling lures mainly Laser Pros. I was weighing up as whether to get some skirts, will these work for Mackerel or are the mainly for Tuna? Also I heard people referring to having a "floater" out the back whilst fishing for other species, can someone point me in the right direction as how to rig a "floater"? also what bait should I use on the floating rig?

Thanks for your help.
P.S. I have done a search of previous topics and can't find this topic, so I do apologies if its a repost.

The west end an south side

Tue, 2014-10-28 11:23

The west end an south side of rotto is where I usually pick them up! From 35-15m. I usually run 4 X-wrap 30s. I got a witch doctor from ocean side an my catches doubled!! Usually get my lures in the water at sun up and if I haven't got a fish by 9:00 go for a bottom bash.

My tip is dont be afraid to go to shallow, we had a couple hooks ups and one landed last summer land based in no deeper than 5m. Have also seen them in Warnbro sound under the jetski in similar depths

I used to like huge rapala magnums with the staino bib, don't know if you get them still, but red and white always worked a treat.

Floater

Tue, 2014-10-28 13:28

I try to always have a Mulie out the back when stationary. Just a Gang on a Wire Trace. Nothing else.

Had good success over the years.

sunrise or sunset isnt a

Tue, 2014-10-28 15:02

sunrise or sunset isnt a biggie in my experieinces, tides are more critical for some reason. Always seem to get them on the lead up to high which was funny as they are a pelagic fish..

Witch Doctor is a key

run lures at different depth

look for bait balls as well... its either going to be tuna or macks feeding on them in the summer

We have came  across bait baills twice with macks feeding in them.

single strand wire or none at all.

the areas you said are OK....but i tend ot stay away from west end rotto, south or noth side just find the fish and you will find they will generally be in a specific area all the time if they are there

oh what i would do to be in WA for the summer

if your on the pick at westend etc

Tue, 2014-10-28 17:23

they don't mind a bit of berly and then catch them on floaters, use mono 1 metre triple gang ,scalies etc, trolling is the way to go deep divers around a bit of structure, they are the wolves of the sea and move around a lot,all around the 3mile even around triggs in shallow, westend is the go but theres a few boats out there, need to keep your ear to the ground where ever the bait is, couple of years ago it was Mindarie but recently their been around GI westend [south]

 I haven't caught a metro

Tue, 2014-10-28 17:56

I haven't caught a metro maccie yet, but have landed plenty in steep point and monkey mia.  Laser pros and giant tremblers.  Favorite colors are chrome pink and gold black back.  But it is important to have a mix if colors and depths at least until you work out what they're hitting.  Trolling speed at 6 - 7 knots.  Teasers work.  Too well sometimes.  I gave to get a new one after my last Boone Sundancer was smashed in half (by a fish).

good luck

though I think you want the water around the 23 degree mark for consistant catches, you will set the world on fire if you nail one

subaquatic nailed it.
the floater out the back ...although works better up north is great and have pulled in countless Macks like this. (unweighted mulie on 5.0 ganged)

contrary to popular belief ....well my opinion anyway... is that Macks hang deep ....NOT in deep water (only up to 30ish meters although ofcourse exceptions.) ....but they like to "sit" on the bottom and are unlike tuna in this respect.

skirts will generally not work for Macks for this reason as well as deep divers do(ofcourse unless you are in real shallow water) but skirts just get "trimmed" by macks so only hard bodies. the laser pros are perfect...get the deepest divers you can get.

good luck.

Yes agree with D_d_001

we see them when diving out from Mindarie in the 25m line they just hang there in small packs of 3 -5 at about 6-7m above us. Have seen them when night diving even late summer in April/May when water is cooler and the light autumn winds have started. Deep divers definitely way to go but you can troll up and down over the top of them and still not get a strike its very frustrating at times.

I don't always subscribe to the temperature needing to be overly warm for mackies, I guy I knew in Busselton, used to be my barber and later on a nearby neighbour, he used to see schools of mackies all year round when diving out on Naturaliste Reef. And I've picked up a couple out there too when I probably shouldn't have.

Had a tripple hook up of 20kg macks last summer north of rotto using skirts and a rigged skip bait, They move through the whole water colum, using a good mirror teaser on like a witchdoctor on a sunny day will rase them

30-18m ground, around 21-23

Thu, 2014-10-30 23:31

30-18m ground, around 21-23 degrees

The metro macks I see are always at the bottom or near the bottom, so approx 18m deep.......Never caught them on line but shot plenty....i would say get some real deep diving lures.

Direction Bank is worth a shot, have seen many a macks out there.

Mon, 2014-11-03 08:20

No dice on the weekend, we did see some bust ups on the surface and the water was 21 degrees. but after about 1.5 hours of trying we gave up... I guess we will have to keep trying :)

On the up side I did catch a nice flounder, and I love whole baked flounder :)

don't discount a large

Mon, 2014-11-03 10:49

don't discount a large bibbless lures either at high speed. They will hit the surface and if the bait is busting up on the surface, go a ping a popper at it, macks love hitting poppers and i've hooked many when trying to find GT's.

I've caught plenty on skirts too but purely by mistake and never a target species.

10-30m is my depth range but i've caught them to 50m before. also as shallow as 4m

Agree with brucesta. Always

Mon, 2014-11-03 12:40

Agree with brucesta. Always used a witchdoctor and bird teaser with a hook in the last squid on my teaser. I dont have an outrigger but still run a spread of 4 lures. Port side is were I tie the teaser to and Starboard the witchy. But obviously this is just what I do. Then run a short corner just behind the teaser, only about 10m from the boat. Run a longer corner at about 15-20m behind the witch. I then have a long corner at about 30m on the port side, and then always a shotgun popper in the middle about 50m back. I agree with Brucesta that the shotgun often gets nailed.

Only use about 200mm of single strand wire and black swivels. Mackies bite anything shiny and I have found silver and copper swivels often gets bitten off. Love Halco Lures and the Laser Pro 190 in Red head and King Brown are my favourites, and the money spent stays local. Any popper works IMO on the shotgun.

And when bottom bouncing always have a floater at the back. Start with a mulie on a gang, a leader of about 3m to a swivel. I tie a lenght of light line to the swivel and then tie a party balloon at about 1m and just let it drift out behind the boat. Works best at anchor though. However a livie is far better, so as soon as I have any likely legal candidate it gets added instead of the ganged mulie. With the gang I dont bother with wire, but sure do with the livie.

Most fishing however I should add has been off Dampier where there is plenty of Mack-candy bycatch.

Perth Mackerel Advice

Wed, 2014-11-12 10:54

I must give it a go then. I normally only try get Mackies in Kalbarri and Steep Point.

In Perth metro waters. are the chances of catching a few Mackies the same as catching a bag limit of Demersial fish?
