Pets and hooks
My first forum topic woohoo!
Just wondering if any of you maggots have had any problems with your dogs or cats swallowing hooks?
A month or so back, I returned form a late night jetty mission and started unpacking my bucket. I pulled out my lure box and out flew something small, didnt give it much thought until I saw the two dogs nudging each other out of the way for something special. To my horror Id flicked out a size 12 longshank with a bit of bait still attached and my top dog had wolfed it! Panic mode I grabbed him and saw the line go all the way down his throat. I tried to pull on it gently and he went crazy with headshakes ala marlin. I grabbed him again and bit the line off 20cm or so from his mouth. In a mad state, hands on head I ran inside woke the missus told her to get on the phone to a vet and went back out to see how things were travelling with my little fella. He was doing the odd headshake but I couldnt see the line anymore, he had either swallowed it or spat it. I looked around for a bit and couldnt find anything. Took him to murdoch 24hr vets just in case, $600 and a couple of hours later they are saying there is no hook in him. Next morning we're back out in the yard searching for a needle in a haystack to put my mind at rest. Just when we had given up I saw the hook and line glistening in the sun minus bait. What an ordeal.
The lesson i've learn't is always remove the bait from hooks when your done fishing!

When I was a kid I remember
When I was a kid I remember coming outside after dad had gotten back from fishing in the boat and found our cat hanging from a set of gangs that were left dangling from a rod. Woops! After a few scratches the cat was successfully released. That always left me making sure the bait was off all hooks before getting home myself.

having two dogs and one cat,
having two dogs and one cat, we extra careful.
rule is all hooks off rods before being put in ute. also I use an only ice cream container for hooks used that I want to recycle again. I tend to toss a hook once used, crush it flat and into the bin it goes. Why try re use a hook worth 10cents and loose a magic fish... seen that more than once.
Second rule is don't bring home old hooks with bait on them, as they are like sweats to flies for pets. Thats why I dump them in rule 1.
Third rule is keep the animals lock away when un packing, two reasons for that:
first is of course the hooks issue. but second is I learnt the hard was once back in SAFFA-land when I turned my back on the dog and a nice sized Kob ( mulloway) only to look back and see the bugger eating it on the grass behind me.... not happy Jan!!!

Maggots maybe a bit
Maggots maybe a bit offensive, i was TUI (typing under the influence)!
Not the best feeling, my missus had a similar incident Goodz with their cat many years ago.
Yeah Tony more than once I ve dropped the fish on the lawn for a quick wash gone back to the car and come back to find half chewed fish. Might start locking them away like you said.

Black labrador
While moving furniture in to the new place in Two Rocks, the black labby decided to greet the new neighbours. He wandered over to the other side of the court to where Stan and Dick [became great mates with the two old buggers] had laid out their catch of herring on the lawn, well Ripper [dog] walked up, picked up and ate the biggest fish, wagged his tail and walked off to his new home to the amazement of all of us.
Ripper was a prick with anything that came from water, cray legs, occy, crabs rotten mulies it didn't matter, in his eyes it was more tasty that ordinary meat and dog biscuits. When beach fishing with him you had to keep a close eye or else not only your bait would disappear.
One time I could see a bit of line sticking from his mouth and on inspection he had a 1/0 tarpon through his top lip, out came the pliers to cut it in half to remove it while he stood there like it was an everyday occurrence.

as the amount of fat you have to cut off when filleting does not leave you with a full meal...

Was up the Murray River once
Was up the Murray River once and left a baited hook on the pontoon, came back the next day and had caught a 10cm lizard. Managed to let him go with not much harm.
Have two dogs and a cat. Am very carefull around the place with hooks as a result but the cat squirms too much to attach it to the 12/0 (if the misus reads this I'm in trouble).

Ive had 2 pet related
Ive had 2 pet related incidents, one was a few years ago when my dad and i were getting ready for a fishing trip, had all the equipment laid out on the back table when the dog ran passed and hooked itself on one of its back legs. Luckily it wasnt in to deep so a sharp knife and a pair of pliers did the trick.
The second incident happend when i was all of 5 years old. I woke up before the olds and wonderd outside to discover a big pool of water in the backyard. I quickly found a piece of fishing line with a lure attached to it and started throwing it into the puddle and pulling it back in. My cat was sitting next to me and it all of a sudden decided to have a swipe at the lure as it was being worked through the fishy looking water. The lure managed to get lodged into its front paw, the cat went phsycho and jumped over the fence, so i quickley ran inside and went back to bed and the parents were none the wiser.
