We caught a couple of these the other day out in the 60m mark. originally i thought it was a much larger version of the small spotted cods the harrass us but on a closer look it was quite different

2nd that
yep we call them honeycomb cod or dinner fish.
Up at ex or coral b if we catch one , we keep it for dinner , usually with a pearl perch
or 2, and that way we get to freeze up the reds etc , but still have a feed.
And yep that looks like a cracker.

Duskytail Cod
This is actually a Duskytail Cod Epinephelus bleekeri. Great catch - this is not a very commonly seen fish at all and most of the records come from well offshore. Note the lower 2/3 of the tail is very dusky and only the top third is patterned. Dampier is as far south as we know they occur.

thanks Glenn
Thanks Glenn, I was pretty sure it wasn't a honeycomb as I'd caught plenty of them before.

Heaps out of Dampier Ads.
Ads,
I have caught a fair few of these off dampier but a fair way out. Have only kept one because the rest released really well the only one I kept I haven't had a chew on yet but after reading some of these posts it might be coming out of the freezer pretty soon.
I tried to research it and the best I could come up with was a Brown Spotted rock cod but it is good to know what they actually are now and next time they might be ending up in the esky.
