Poppers for choppers

Hows it going all,

Just wondering can any of you help me out here, with some advise or info on the best type of poppers for choppers.

Im kinda running out of ideas to get myself one of these green backs.  I like the sound of the active chasing of these guys waiting to smash a lure/popper.

Can anyone recommend a few different types of poppers that has worked for you and the possible best times to try them.

Thanks in advance.

I prefer stickbaits and plugs personally.

Most of my success have come from the Bluescodes but the terminal on them is pretty average so you would need to change it.

Otherwise there are plenty of others out there that work well. Can not go past a Richter plug though, cast like bullets and work a treat.

Agree with bluescodes being great but am yet to have a problem with them, hooks are very sharp and strong and split rings are well and truly strong enough for running 20lb..

Tailor lure info

Tue, 2012-06-26 12:15

We have a range of poppers that would suit but the standount would be the Richter Plugs and very well priced. As mention they cast well so great for landbase tailor and they have small sizes also so perfect for choppers etc.

We do like our sinking stickbaits also as that can be the undoing on getting subsurface/shy fish to feed. We use the Adagio/Northcraft and Bluecode stickbaits.

Best times, Sunrise, sunset and leading up to your high tide.

I prefer them to the Richters. They come in different sizes also. The Adagio weighted stick baits are fantastic for deeper water or when the Tailor go down deeper. I hate losing them though, they look expensive and are expensive LOL.

Cheers lads, thanks for the info. Fantastic advise coming in from ye all. Delighted now.

Cant wait to finally get stuck into a few choppers and at least with the stickbaits and lures it allows moveability from spot to spot, rather than hanging in the one spot waiting for the bait to be set in..

Thanks again all, any more info and advise always welcome.

Depends on the terrain beau

You can't throw stick baits from shore over shallow reefs mate. That's where the poppers come into their own. I also love seeing the Tailor/Salmon come out of the water to attack the popper from above.

Tue, 2012-06-26 15:16

Yo-zuri Hydro poppers are an awesome casting popper for larger tailor (43g) and don't make an enormous bloop all over the place. I really rate the cotton cordel poppers too but again, the tailor have to be 45cm+ before you will even hook them (consistently anyway).

He also said to apologise to Big John, he thought you were in Karratha not Kunnunununununurra.

Used to use poppers manily

Tue, 2012-06-26 18:20

Used to use poppers manily for tailor, like FatR's, Richter Plugs, Scoob(Seaducer) Poppers, Halco Roosters are the main ones but i have thrown many more around before too. Also used to like using the Raider range of metals for Tailor and Salmon. Have mucked around with some stickbaits, which seem to work good too at times.

But by far the main lure is use now are a type of metal lure called Tady Lures, they are from the USA. They are made from differnt things, some fibreglass, some Aluminium. I bought a heap back in 2008 found they were by far the best producing lure for the Tailor i target up along the Coral Coast. So good infact when my brother was in Las Vegas this year i got him to buy me 36 of them in different lengths, weights, and colours. The biggest ones are about 25cm long but can weigh depending on model from 1oz to 10oz(25gm to 290gm) so you can have the same lures in the same colour but varying weights depending on what you require at the time. The smallest tady's i got are around 7cm long. The most common one is use is the Model4/0 which is 15cm long and 6oz and the Model45 again 15cm long but 3oz.

Great thing about them is you can ,make them behave like a metal, like a spinner, like a stickbait or like a popper, purely on how you retrieve(pulsing), how fast you retrieve, and how you move your rod around during the retieve.

Probably doesnt help you if you are trying to find local lures, but just thought id let you know about these lures, that i now almost exclusively use. My last trip up the Coral Coast the Tadys got 20+ Tailor, normal metals got 2(heaps of chases though), poppers got 1(lots of chases too) stickbait got none. In saying that i spent more time throwing Tadys, but would alternate every now and then and throw the other types of lures at the Tailor( i could see the school) but they just didnt seem as interested as in the Tady's.

http://fishwrecked.com/forum/long-weekend-coral-coast-trip-report You can see a Tady in pic 3

My brother got them all for

Tue, 2012-06-26 18:43

My brother got them all for me from the mega Bass Pro Shop/Casino in Vegas, but the original ones i bought in 2008 were from a Place down on Washington Ave near Santa Monica that has now since closed(from my google searches of it it has). Same place i also got some Mega sized 16 and 24oz Jig heads(Wangler knows the ones i am talking about :p )

A quick search i have done shows some other places that stocks them

http://www.charkbait.com/cs/csc_Tady.htm

http://www.mahitackle.com/tadylures.html

Guess it comes down to freight though. My brother was paying about $7-9 for them each at Bass Pro. I have seen them for sale on Ebay at a ridicuous price for the lure AND the freight charge.

Got a friend in the USA that can buy them in bulk for you and mail them to you? Think that woulkd be the most cost effective option?

Tailor Lures

Tue, 2012-06-26 19:25

Hi Mucsavage,

As you can see from the replies, there are many different lures that you can catch Tailor on. I'd suggest that the lure you chose will depend a bit on the conditions and the environment you are wanting to fish in. I never really tried stickbaits so I'm not sure where they fit into what I'm about to offer but here's a few tips I have based on living in Kalbarri for a few years:

1. In clamer conditions metal slices tend to be more effective than poppers. I used Raiders but only because they were pretty cheap. Whatever is shiny and suits your gear weight-wise should work.

2. Poppers caught me much bigger fish than metal slices. That's partly to do with the fact that Tailor tended to throw them more easily due to the fact thay only have one set of trebles. Any popper that throws up a bit of water going down the face of a wave or in the gap between waves will work. I caught plenty of solid fish on pretty crappy looking poppers I'd made out of broome sticks I'd worked on a lathe for a few minutes.

3. In conditions with big swells and lots of white water, I always went for poppers. Don't be put off by these conditions, so long as there are a few bits of clear water between waves, the Tailor can find your popper. Big swells always meant big Tailor.

4. There are different types of poppers, some float and some sink. If you are in shallow reef country I'd be going for something like a Roosta popper because they float with plenty of bouancy, so you're less likely to lose them. Sinking poppers are okay but if you're inexperienced with them you might lose a few.

5. Remember to work your lure right to the shore line because Tailor (and big ones too) are often roaming in ledges right at your feet. With this in mind, don't be put off by howling sea-breezes, as you don't always have to toss a lure a mile out to catch a fish.

6. No matter what time of the day, if conditions were right, I'd always feel I was in with a chance at high tide. Early morning and late afternoon were also good times for Tailor. I'd like my chances the most if there was a high tide at sun-rise or sun-set.

7. Conditions and timing are pretty important so it's worth asking someone who knows what they are doing if you can observe them in action in order to learn how they do it.

8. Keep your eyes peeled. Big Tailor can be frustratingly inaccurate at times and often have a crack at your lure without getting anywhere near it. If you lob back in the general area, you can often get a fish to strike again with more success.

Hope this helps,

Mat.T.

Good old unweighted mullie does the trick, add a small sinker at the front of gangs for casting distance if you like.
