You use metals on the reefs?

Tue, 2012-06-26 18:35

My. You are a soldier or fortune. I'd be tearing my hair out with snags. Best to use poppers in those conditions IMO but then again, you seem to know how it's done. Keep the pics of the 80cm Tailor coming.

Try before you buy mate

Wed, 2012-06-27 11:17

If you can free yourself up Sat morning early I'll take you for a run and we can test drive a few situations and poppers. Personally I would prefer to have multiples of 3 of my fav styles as opposed to a mixed bag of lollies. When you eat all the red ones then you have nothing else of interest LOL.

If your looking at spending $20 for lures you sure as hell want to be using them.

Wed, 2012-06-27 11:27

A really cheap and effective stickbait is a river2sea rover, you have no idea how many fish I've Bowled over with those and I always have one in my tackle box. Just change the hooks for anything over a couple of kilo. Should set you back around 15 bucks. Have caught multiple salmon and tailor on them as well as salmon trout and skippy.

Why so many? The only one you need to get salmon and tailor is the biggest chome or gold raider, the one thats about 7-8 inches long. It will out fish all the others in your collection hands down IMO

i disagree completely. bluescodes, bullchops, addagios and other stickbaits absolutely crream it compared to twisty's. Need different stickbaits for diffeerent conditions. Floating, sinking etc.

From the mouth of a salesman.. LOL

Wed, 2012-06-27 20:44

I agree with John. Keep it simple. That's not saying that we shouldn't have a selection for different conditions but let's not get ahead of ourselves and get too caught up in all this brand bullshit. In a golf bag you are limited to the number of clubs you have at your disposal so it comes down to creativity. If all else fail just go back to  baitcasting mullies...In golfing terms.. just use the 7 iron, it's a safe bet.

Where John and I come from we didn't have all these fancy options or iPhones to confuse the basic art of catching fish. We just went out there (and still do) and catch fish.

Wed, 2012-06-27 21:05

Im serious though, If twisty's were better in my opinion, i would flog them more, but i sell just as many twistys and richter plugs, especially for people who dontg have the appropriate gear for casting light stickies  like northcrafts at a reef. hell, i still use plugs and twisty's in appropriate situations, i just prefer fishing topwater for visual strikes on light gear.

Junk

Thu, 2012-06-28 09:03

Have owned dozens of poppers because of rave reports on how good they are, never caught a single fish on one. Just about worn them out dragging them up rocks, sand etc.

Stickbaits work if you drag them from behind a boat to catch mackies or tuna, don't like eating mackies and will only bring one home if someone REALLY wants one [same goes for mulloway, remember I live in Carnarvon]

The best time to catch tailor is when you have wind on the water and thats usually the sea breeze or a SWester so that puts light lures out of the game because of the lack of distance you can cast them into a breeze..

Salmon will take a lure in preference to a mulie  9 x out of 10 and are usually a fair cast out except when they're schooling on a beach when you could probably grab one with your hands and theres no fun in that . There is nothing like a salmon strike on a high speed metal compared to the soft bite of one taking a mulie , you are cranking like mad when next thing the rods bent double and line is screaming out before you can stop winding. Magic.

Have heaps of soft plastics and again I must be doing something wrong, got maybe 5-6 fish on them after spending hours and hours trying [same goes for tuna circle hooks!!!]

 casting poppers and other

Thu, 2012-06-28 14:27

casting poppers and other surface stickbaits for salmon, and pumping like crazy, getting a bubbletrail going and having ten 7 kilo fish greyhound over each other OUT OF THE WATER to hit the lure is a million times better than spinning a metal and hooking up under water. most of these stickbaits like the bluescodes, bullchops and addagios are weighted at around 40 grams and certain models are around 60g, such as the Halciyon Halshico's, so you can throw them in a stiff wind. Stickbaits have dozens more uses than being essentially 'trolled' behind a boat for mackies. Their best uses are casting for tailor, salmon, trevally, macks, GTs, tuna and even dollies. If you are using a stickie solely for towing behind a boat, you have rocks in your head. You cant say that ASWBs are made for macks...... macks love them, but thats just a given because makes love everything shiny and rattling. Yeah, if i had 55 dollars to spend on every stickbait i bought, i would go with the ASWBs and the likes, but i dont, so $25-30 dollars does just fine. Yeah, maybe a 55g twisty will catch a lot of fish for you, but you wouldnt use it over shallow reef would you? Thats where a popper or floating stickbait comes into play, and 9 out of 10 times, you will catch on it. You just have to work the lure differently and find the retrieve stlye and speed that entices the hits.

(sorry for the paragraph, haha)

Classic

Wed, 2012-06-27 21:04

New school vs old school.  I agree stick baits are nice but at $20 a pop you wanna be careful where your throwing them. Metals and poppers always have and always will catch lots of fish and sometimes a mulie is the only answer.

It makes me laugh when I see the price of some of those GT poppers

But it sounds like there is only one solution to this Vince vs Leemo old school vs new school

Fish off with Leemo sounds like a good challenge after I have had my hip replacement LOL. Then I could really see how good these young bulls are and how much stamina they have ;). So far as jeffree is concerned I would need to keep him away from is naps and gadgets LOL, not to mention his lady ((or me away from her LOL (with all due respect)).

*sigh* young versus not so young, kids versus men. A few Crownies and I will enter any challenge (body permitting).

Hey Jeffree

Thu, 2012-06-28 14:45

Remember one thing!

Us "old farts" invented and created all this modern "conveniences" you speak off. About time to get off your arse, stop sleeping and invent something useful too.

But I tend to agree with carnarvonite (not football though - Collingwood bla blah) that horses for courses. I myself try Modern things, but often fall back to the tried and trusted. I have a mini collection of possibly 100odd lures, poppers and stickbaits, and more often than not go back to basic old favourites. Halco's for Mackies, R2S Triho for trout, Emporers and especially Triple tail just nail them etc.

Even Tailor fishing poor old Smiling jacks worked better than some Exxy ones, and they are cheap as toast compared with others.

Each to their own.

i think it comes down to personal preference, what u prefer is what u would use, i like to try as many different lures and see what works best, i have caught tailor and salmon on most of my stickbaits in the pic and each lure is slightly different.

Looking good Brett,

Anything works just need to get that right technique for each lure and you will catch, Bluescodes, adagios, bullchops can all be worked on surface or sub surface. the Bluescodes and adagio's actually get a nice surface action.
