I run a saltist 4500 on the sensor surf... tough as nails but might be a bit heavey for throwing poppers all day .

+1 for the saragosa. I run my 10k on a 6'9 Terez 40-80lb and for the balls both rod and reel has, it's surprisingly lightweight and I don't think you'd have much trouble casting all day.

out of all the reels you've mentioned the saragosa is prob the strongest but one reason is that is has the lowest gearing....

the biomaster is the highest geared and for a full day of popping you will catch more fish with a higher geared reel.  (yes it makes a difference !)

It also has the most drag for the 3 you mentioned by a long shot.  (unfortunatly it's the heaviest) but only by a bit.

when popping I'd rather have a slighly heavier reel with higher gearing than a lighter reel with lower gearing.

Popping near Exmouth you will use the stronger drag too !!!

Edit: just realised you didn't actually mention the Gosa

The shimano Aceration is effectively the JDM version of the Saragosa and you can get it in the higher geared version. It's also a little cheaper.

Don't know why I left the gosa out
Still cant find much feedback on the salina 3 but I like the lifetime warranty on them
Most likely will be going the biomaster unless anyone has something to say about the salina 3

just one thing to consider.I

just one thing to consider.

I looked at the Salina (okuma gear) a while ago.  and was in the same boat so to speak....couldn't find much info.  heard good and bad.  but I don't really know either way.

the lifetime warrenty sounds great in theory.  (and really is I guess)

but for me a lot of my fishing is done north ( I live in perth) travel north when I can.  I put in a lot of $ travelling so when I'm there I want my gear to be working.

Okuma will fix the gear but if it does break you are stuck without you "go to" reel for a whole trip up north.   would suck if it broke on the first day. lol

Shimano gear has 10 year warrenty....( in reality well enough)...think you are going to be using the same reel in 10 years ? would love to hear if any serious fisher here are using the same reel they were using 10 years ago !!!

and I think Shimano will probably be much more reliable in the long run.

have not had a shimano reel break down yet and been fishing with shimano gear a long time and put them through their paces in Coral bay Exmouth etc.

"would love to hear if any serious fisher here are using the same reel they were using 10 years ago !!!"

Still actively using my Daiwa Emblem X that I bought in 2000(now called Emblem Pro) as my bigger lure casting reel for Tailor and Salmon and baits for Mullas and Sharks. Has been drowned 3 times and been service 4 times in that time and still smashes anything I throw at it. Also use my Emblem Pro from 2003 just as much. Infact nearly all my Landbased capture posts have come from these two reels.

Also still use my Shimano Castaic baitcaster from 1997 and Abu Garcia Black Max from 1996, but they only get used for a one week Barra trip each year now, not like the first few years I had them.

Aside from them i also still have and regulary use
2x Shimano Baitrunners 4500 from 1998
TLD25 from 1999
TLD15 from 1997
Charter Special from 1998

TLD 20 2spd from 1999

all are still used actively when boat fishing and only the TLD 20 2spd has been serviced once in that time.

Some reels will last for a loooooong time if treated good. And they don't need to be serviced as often as some may think too. Shimano and Daiwa have my tick for sure :)

Good to see

Tue, 2013-06-18 09:43

great to see how good gear lasts,

My first "serious" reel was a penn USA made 9500ss  (pretty bulletproof and has dragged in plenty of decent size GT's and YFT....and everything in between) and is still going strong today bought well over 10 years ago.

but sadly just doesn't get used much (almost at all ) these days, just old technology (and I fish with a Stella now ;)

looking after your gear is very important.  only takes a good clean down after each usage with fresh water then dry to keep good.

credit to you Buz

Gosa IMO

Mon, 2013-06-17 17:10

Tough as nails, and I have owned a few off them. One problem with them is line capacity, but again you will get 300m on it with braid. The average angler will never notice the gearing difference.

They are just tough and wont fail you (proved down south beach fishing when my Stradic and Sustain, along with a Gosa 4000 took a dunk from a freak wave, and only the Gosa got away without a strip down to clean). I wouldnt think you need anything bigger than a 6000 but always get the 8000 as it has a bigger spool, and is otherwise identical.

My 8's have concurred most fish encountered along dampier including some midrange GTs, but if you are specifically looking for GTs then I suggest you upgrade anyway. In this league only Saltiga and Stella are almost sure bets agains Gtrains, but my 14000 Gosa did win a few battles ( and wasnt smoked) but not a bar on the Stella10KSW.

Not specifically looking at GTs then I would go a Gosa 8000 or even 5000 for weight. You will be able to cast all day with these, and will easily concur most common species including mirange GTs (but it will be fun).

cudbfishin, thats what i bloody thought but i havent seen any run out prices as of yet, ill have a ring around tomorrow and see what i can find, a stella would be 100% ideal, but apprentice wages dont think so

D_d_001 great point on the warranty and i have heard of a few salina 2s breaking and being replaced, but as you said it will be a waste of money if it breaks first fish

might go the gosa if i cant rustle up funds in time, i always thought they were heavy lunky, guess not from specs

not much more than what? $350

Mon, 2013-06-17 20:28

not much more than what? $350 for a 10K stella SW? If you find some let me know!

With the new model stella being much more expensive than the 2010 model, I haven't seen that much discounting of the outgoing one at all. Like 10-15% maybe, but not 50%.

Actually the price of stellas out of the US on ebay actually went up slightly after the pricing of the new ones was announced. For that reason I got my 18k locally.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
