Port Gregory or Horrocks

Anybody been to these places and can advice on the boat launching capabilities.

I need to launch a 21ft shark cat is this too big and heavy for a beach launch at these places.

hello noha ihave fished it a bit beach + boat it is a bit hard the best thing is to use mesh ie 50x50 about 1to2 meter long for the boat trailer to stop it sinking and it will give you time to get it on +off if there is a bit off wash and u should b ok ps many hands will help

50x50 weld mesh, good idea.

50x50 weld mesh, good idea. I was trying to think what I could use.

I have seen Port Gregory before and dont fancy my chances straight down from the jetty if the beach is cut up from other users turning up the beach.
Whats Horrocks like??  Google earth shows a dual lane access to the beach for launching.
Which would be better in your opinion.

I went to Port gregory in

Mon, 2008-01-14 13:41

I went to Port gregory in September last year with our 22fter.

IF you drive onto the beach and head north around the bend a little its easier to launch your boat there. shouldnt get stuck launching your boat. The beach is quite firm and can drive easily along it towing your boat.

Where are you staying? if your staying at the Caravan park, say to the guy who runs it (Cant remember his name, les or something) that your heard he lends out his mooring for a slab of beer. If its not being used he will let you use it for a slab, and trust me its well worth it.

His mooring sits about 20 m from shore, and the port gregory beach is a very unique one. Because of the shape of the inner reef, the water current only runs in one direction all the time which is south to north.

With the mooring Les or whatever his name is will tell you how to use it, basically your tie a spare rope to the back end of your boat, and a spare anchor and walk up onto the beach. Dig a 1m hole and bury the Anchor in it. What this will do is give you the ability to pul the back end of your boat around, and because his mooring is so close, you walk out onto the sand bar which would only be knee deep at the worst of times, and step onto your boat.

Works bloody great.

As for retrieving your boat, this is a somewhat more difficult task. BUT saying that, if you speak to the caravan park owner nicely, he will come down and give you a hand. Basically you need 2 4WD's, and either wire mesh, or rubber matt's. Best bet is to try pick low tide, and put your trailer int he water right next to the jetty (About 30 or so to the north) so you can drive straight out the beach access. This also helps for the 2nd 4WD. DONT put your 4WD's Tyres in the water if you can, keep them about 1m from it. if your trailer is long enough you should be able to drive your boat into your trailer. If it is windy like it was for us, the wind and the current go in the same direction, it is very hard to hold a large boat to put onto the trailer. Remember where your boat goes onto the trailer, it will only be 1m deep.

Once driven on, Try pull it out with 1 car (If its a fibre boat, i dont like your chances) if this does not work (Dong dig holes) and Low range is a must, The guy who runs the Caravan park if you ask him, will come give you a hand. It should easily pull out with 2 cars. We did see others get out with 1 car, but it needs to be a calm day with little wind for this to be made easy. If its calm, you should be able to winch your boat up without too much trouble.

As for fishing, we did ok, got a few Baldies, and a couple Dhuies. sharks, sambo's.
If you have not been there before, there is only a couple of places you can get out through the main reef. The easiest which is about 30-40m Wide gap, is to the north about 500 metres from the Jetty. You will be able to see where it is, as the water almost always breaks on the reef. Its quite easy to get through, just keep your revs up and push through. There wont be any breakers there, just some current to fish with. If its calm you should be able to see the Ship wreck in this Gap.

If you head straight out from this gap, and the boat ramp, there is some good reef lumps in the 3-4 mile range which usually always produce fish. Also if you look south, you should see some white sand cliffs. Head down to them, out around the 15-20m Mark, there is some good coral that produces some good Baldies.

Other than that, 10-12 mile good fishing out there, plenty of fish to be had... Just use your sounder as there is stacks of reef.

As for shore based if you want to, i saw some kids landing some small stripped Mackerel from the Jettywhich looked like heaps of fun, around the 40cm mark.
Also ifyou drive to the beach at the Jetty, and head south down just past the end of the reef, there is a whole in the reefs on the corner, which holds some good mullas and some good tailer.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Bodie
