Possible Scam?
Submitted by Toby Roe on Fri, 2013-09-13 14:12
Hi All,
I am selling a few items on gum tree and I was contacted by one a potential buyer asking for a few details about an item. After a couple of rounds of SMS containing details the buyer mentioned that they would like to purchase the item but they wanted to put the money directly into my bank account and have me drop it off at toll once the money had cleared. My concern is that this sounds like a scam but I can’t think how it would work?
What are your thoughts?
Cheers
Toby

don't really see how you can
don't really see how you can get done over? find out what it will cost to post with Toll. Add the cost to your selling price and inform the buyer. Then wait until the money clears into your account. If the buyer lives interstate, I don't see what other possible way there is unless you expect him to fly over to pick it up?

they usually email a fake
Money never comes through and they will do nothing but waste your time and effort. Tell them pick up only
They usually email a fake receipt so the seller thinks its been transferd. Most people dont fall for it but maybe 3 out of 10 will so they try it on to as many as possible. While on the phone to one of them last time i heard another phone call in the background. The guys was ringing up for another bit on gumtree. I recon all they do it monitor gumtree and scam all day everyday. I said to the last one that im acually heading to melborne and can hand deliver it to them and asked for the adress. They hung up on me. Scamming wankers

Innocent your honour
haha , last week , I sent a email to a queenslander about a item ( on gumtree), we agreed on a price
and my next email I sent him , quite innocently , told him I was at work ( I was!) but to send me his
bsb and account no , and I would do internet banking etc etc.
Total backfire batman!, he promply ignored me , took the item down, and ran for it.
What next? , send him a email telling him I am not a scammer? that will work, not!
He missed a sale, I lost a item I wanted, grr bloody scammers.

Common business practice
Common business practice these days .. should only take 24hrs to show in your account . If anything , he's the one that should be weary that your not going to scam him and not send it .

imo i rather sell to someone
imo i rather sell to someone who can come see it in person , saves waiting for cash to clear. Time emailing back and fwd etc Dont have to worry about any probs down the track with it not turning up, item gets damaged or not exactly what they are after. Also saves taking it to post office and mailing it and more.
I have been down that track before and had probs. Never again lol

Thanks for all the responses,
Thanks for all the responses, I have a bit of a mixed bag to choose from. I will have a think about which way to go but I guess if the money is in my bank then it is mine so maybe not too much risk.

Use PayPal.
Set up an account - you get your money, they get their goods. No problems...

Paypal take a cut and your
Paypal take a cut and your still open to dramas should the purchaser start a dispute .. as they hold the funds . Also I think I was reading there was a scam recently whereas the funds would apparently show in your paypal account and then was able to be withdrawn.. IMO Direct deposit , no middleman it's straight there in your account .. then send

i believe what they do is
i believe what they do is send you to much money, once the item is posted they go to there bank and explain what has happend (they transfered to much money with proof of the advertised item etc) and they reverse the money transfer. you think you got a bonus $50 or so but in reality you just got scammed.

Lots of scammers on gumtree.
Lots of scammers on gumtree. I'm with Tailor Marc, come look at it in person, hand me cash (or not if you don't want) no problems either end. I've sent goods before that got damaged during shipping, won't be doing it again.

I live in Carnarvon and have bought a lot of stuff off FW, paying for postage or arranging pickups in Perth, always transfer $ over the net and tell them not to send it till the cash has cleared.
As long as you can see the $ in your account, there is NO RISK.

Laundering / Scam
It's a pretty common scam - the put all the money in your account, all is sweet. Then they say nah, not going though with it so don't send it. You send the money back to them asn all seems ok.
But they paid you from someones hacked bank account and then that's identified by the bank and they reverse the fraudulent transaction. But you've paid some guy the refund as the sale didn't go ahead....

if theyve hacked someones
if theyve hacked someones account why would they need to go thru that rigmarole?
Why not just empty it to a Russian account etc?
