Prado tyres.

hi guys. Wondering if I could get some advice. Have a 2016 diesel prado gal, and have just worn out the standardtryes and looking to upgrade to something a bit more aggressive. I do use it as a daily vehicle so will be a lot if freeway driving, but also do a bit of beach driving which I hope to do a lot more if in the future. Most of the tracks have quite a bit of cap rock etc so thinking some thicker sidewalks may be a good idea.

so far I’m thinking coopers at3 Lts, 265/70r17 121/118s.

i haven’t had much experience with 4wd tyres in the past, so any advice or personal experience greatly appreciated!

given the tyres above are a bit bigger, are they likely to throw off Speedo etc or loose power when towing? (Obviously, towing the boat is a big factor too :))

cheers!

I’m on my second set of BFG

Fri, 2018-11-23 07:51

I’m on my second set of BFG KM2s

mud terrain as I wanted the more aggressive look

do plenty of beach driving,  and has seen lots of rock tracks around quobba and gnaraloo tracks

my first set I got almost 95,000km our of them

I never had a tire chunk off.

now as there is a KM3 out, the price has been cut down to about $300 a tyre

i get barely any road noise from them, they are a different tred pattern to previous muddies and I couldn’t speak more highly of them

steer clear of coopers

they are shocking

thanks mate! I have read a few reviews where people were pretty dissapointed with the coppers...

just wondering what was it you found to be the main issue? from what i undersatnd they can be a bit poor in the wet, which concerns me.

Toyo’s AT2’s are pretty good

Fri, 2018-11-23 08:00

Toyo’s AT2’s are pretty good especially at the price.

Replaced them on the 200 a few weeks back and was surprised to discover they got over 80,000km.

If I hadn’t been slack about rotating them (front got flogged from the roundabouts in our area) would’ve got another 5-10.

$309 up our way so prob less in the big smoke

Toyo open country ATII LT

Ive been running these on my cruiser for about 50000ks now, and cant fault them in anyway. Spend alot of time off road they have been fantastic.

On road they are alot quieter than the BFG and seem to have abit better grip in the wet. Offroad they are great on the beach and bag out really nicely. have spent plenty of time up in places like DHI, cape peron, warra, gnaraloo etc and never had an issue.

Previously had the BFG all terrains which were great tyres in their own right, but when the toyos are due for replacement (will get 90-100k out of them by the looks) i will be going with them again

Cheers

Bridgestones

Fri, 2018-11-23 08:06

My first preference would be the BFG AT's but I cant justify the price.  I have run Bridgestone ATs for years on my Hiluxes and Landcruisers and have had a good run out of them.  I have 265/65/17 AT's on my Hilux which has Prado 17" rims that were fitted by the previous owner.  I get good mileage from them, no noticeable road noise, they handle the rough stuff well and are around $100 per tyre cheaper than the BFGs.  I put another set on earlier in the year and then did a 6000km trip to central Australia through the desert towing a camper trailer.  3500km of that was on rough, rocky dirt roads.  The tyres stood up extremely well with nothing more than a little rounding of the corners of the blocks.  They still looked almost new when we got home.

General Grabber

Fri, 2018-11-23 09:08

Hi Have General Grabber AT2's on my 150 Prado in 265/70/17r. Thats about as big as you can go without a lift.

Ive done alot of beach driving and very happy, pretty quite on road and good in the wet. No punctures in 50,000kms and ive hardly worn the tread.  I had the Cooper At3s on a previous car and I had 3 punctures on normal raod driving in less than a year. Not sure if thats bad luck but three in a year fair suck of the sauce bottle!

My brother has the Toyo Open Country AT, another very good tire.

Mickey T's

Fri, 2018-11-23 11:00

From new I replaced the standard tyres with the same size Mickey Thompson Baja STZ's.  Zero issues on and off road, and for the regular highway stuff they are pretty quiet, and more so than the more aggressive treads.  Replaced with the same size and I'm not sure you want to go through all the hassels relating to different tyre sizes.  Whilst a bit pricey up front, so far these tyres have 110,000 legimitmate kays which make them competitive in cents per km, and still have around 5mm of tread left.  Mine is a 2015 Prado GXL and will be choosing these again next time.

I’ve been using cooper st/maxx on my Hilux for the last 4 years, great tyres and not a single issue to date. Usually get between 85-95k out of them depending on the driving I’ve been doing.

 Yep anything but Coopers...

BFG's or Mickeys for top end or there are a few options now that are good rubber where you'll basically get 4 for the price of 3 of the Mickeys or BFG's....

We have Cooper STs on the cruiser. Have staked one, but was probably my fault, but would buy them again. Done maybe 30k kilometres and they’re still like new.

A thousand opinions

Sat, 2018-11-24 02:59

Unfortunately you’ll get many varied opinions with no real information to distinguish one brand from another.  For every bad review of a given tyre or brand you can find a good one to match it.  Bear in mind that most user feedback on the net has a strong negative bias - people don’t generally jump up and down and tell you how good their tyres are.

Having said that, my recommendation is any well known brand of all terrain style tyre should fit your needs.  Buy the best ones you can afford, and look after them.  Keep an eye on tread wear, adjust your pressures appropriately for what you’re doing, and rotate them regularly.  Do that and you’ll get good performance and life out of most tyres.  Probably the most important one is pressure - can be a pain but going from blacktop to dirt road to track to beach should trigger you to stop and consider if your pressures are appropriate.

Oh and pay attention when off-road to what your tyres are rolling on/over.  All the ply ratings in the world can’t beat simply avoiding obstacles that could damage your tyres.

Tyres

Sat, 2018-11-24 21:54

Hi, I had the  same vehicle, I got 30k out of factory tyres, I got 75k out of desert duellers. Driving hwy and horrendous dirt roads north west and east of Kalgoorlie. The sand beaches of Esperance were better than most roads so they didn’t worry them at all.

Noise was minimal

i did 3 years of 80k per annum and would still replace with the desert duellers.

 I put Falken Wildpeak AT3

Sun, 2018-11-25 05:19

I put Falken Wildpeak AT3 XL's on my Pathfinder about 15k ago. They're awesome in the wet and good on gravel. I've done the Wilbinga track at 14psi about 20 times and heaps of gravel driving and I'm really impressed. The biggest difference I've noticed is the thicker sidewall gets rid of the roll when going around obstacles and roundabouts.
