Trailer Maintenance / Rust

So the time has come for a little TLC on the trailer.

As the photos below show there is some rust starting to show. Some is patchy through the galvanising, in other section, the galvanising has warn away completely.

The trailer itself is about 10 years old and i know isnt going to last forever, so i want to prolong its life for a reasonable period. I am not planning on completely stripping it and regalvanising.

I was thinking of using a coating like POR15 or Rust Bullet on the outside, then maybe soaking the inside of the RHS in tectyl or fish oil.

I was wandering if anyone has done similar, or has any recommendations of coatings that have worked well, or not worked well.

A good mates trailer is probably in the same basket. Be interested to see what info others can provide

You will find if it looks

You will find if it looks like that it is just about Fukd.  10 years is a good run.  It will be completely rusty inside the rails.  Get a hammer and do some tapping on the really rusty bits if you can dent it or put a hole in it you know it is gone.   If one rib breaks and then the others let go sometimes bad things can happen to the bottom of your boat. Defineately wouldnt take it on a long trip looking like that.

ive done the hammer test, and it all felt pretty solid. FLakes of galv came off, but no brittleness, holes or dents.

I've been meaning to do mine

I've been meaning to do mine for a while though it doesn't look as bad as yours. Going to sand clean, prime and por15 the outside and then try and use a garden sprayer to por15 the inside. Quite a few vids on youtube. Would have to at least extend the trailer life a bit
