Preferences and opinions

Noticed that when someone asks for an opinion on an item they are thinking of buying etc, they already have made up their mind before asking the question.

Those who answer his query will always come out with their preference and won't be willing to admit that they may have made a stuff up with something they may have bought or done in the past but insist that theirs is the right way to go. We all make mistakes, I have bought rods and reels on someones insistence and found some are buckets of pus but others are still in use today, like about 4 or 5 Mitchell 499 reels and 3 Butterworth beach rods I bought 50 years ago when they were the rage, others like a couple of Penn, Daiwa and Shimano reels sit in a box gathering dust because in my opinion I shouldn't have followed others advice.

My answer is, do your own research and back your decision as its all part of learning life isn't easy and money doesn't grow on trees like our Govt tells us.

Gps points given to you by others can be in the same basket, I have been given heaps over the years only to find that when you look for them they are not there, wasting valuable fishing time doing expanding circles with both eyes glued to the sounder expecting it ti pop up and doesnt yet I have been asked for spots from when I pro fished down south, given pages of them away and not received a single thank you or any feedback on what they have caught off them

Very hard to admit you stuffed up.
The need for re-assurance on a big decision (big $$$) is a valid request i think. I will not ask but search to find similar threads and research what others have done and more importantly - WHY they made that choice.
I usually contemplate for way too long and the opportunity to buy something good passes by.
We all have experiences with multitudes of stuff we have bought and should give honest feedback as to not drag others into a shitty outcome.
As for waypoints - an initial feel for an area helps but from then on it's up to the fisherman to sort it out. I understand with the massive costs involved in fishing an initial help to at least get some numbers on the board is gold - nothing worse than a big trip for doughnuts.

Same with Hunting Snapper and the right Weather link / time to go out.

Although advise is good you need to read and learn, get out there!!
Taken years learning the basics i know now when the answers had been there the whole time ( between the lines)....it just time on the water and learning...sometimes learning the hard way is part of it.....as i found out many a time myself :)..

I see your point. I recently put a post up it may be the post you are talking about, I was very happy with the responses I got and they helped me to make my final decision. This site is very good as it let's us people with similar interests communicate together at the press of a button if nobody posts anything then this site will no longer exist.

Keep posting I think.

I think its the Footy thread he's referring to.
Everytime I have a look there, no one seems to agree about anything at all

 you nailed it there

Mon, 2019-06-10 16:09

 you nailed it there John.

putting a question out there will always get mixed respomces from all but its up to the individual to read between the lines. i have gained some great info from the site along with some i chose to ignore. as far as waypoints go , you would be nuts to give out good spots so you pass on the rough areas to look. its helped me and i have helped others.

just gotta remember one important thing, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one but some stink.

Rape and pillage

Mon, 2019-06-10 19:22

Couple of years back was living in Carnarvon caravan park, got to meet a couple of grey nomads who asked where do I catch crabs as I would go out for a couple of hours and come back with boat limit. Silly me told them, they would head out in the morning in one dinghy and get their limit and then in another dinghy in the arvo for another boat limit, cook them and strip the meat out, bag it up and freeze it. All from the same area I gave them and then they had the gall to ask for another spot once the numbers dropped off.

Haha every summer/Xmas period I get heaps of PMs from guys coming down to Esperance for a fish and looking for some advice or help. I always reply and try to help out as much as I can, I know how they feel because Ive fished heaps of new towns/places and nothing beats a bit of local advice.

Some reply back with thanks, pics, results etc others dont bother.

Also had some brilliant feed back .when there kids catch .always brings a smile nothing better in life when you see smiles on there dials. I use to force my kids to go fishing . They hated it. Now they all have boats. Don’t go to pubs just fish, hunt and camp. Life’s good

Mon, 2019-06-10 21:43

No thanks? Chuck me a few of those Geo Bay spots John and I'll give you a bloody oil massage.

True that someone has all but made up their mind already when asking a quesrion but personally if I ask for feedback on something I have already trawled through reviews and forums want to hear real world reviews of a product  from people using it where I would and identify unforseen issues before that final process of dropping coin on it.

Point in case is Rob's feedback on a light bar on my bow after I was looking for advise on a single spotty. My $90 light bar works mint for picking up floats in the dark around the 3 Mile and I was going to drop $350 on a spotty.

I don't know what's more disturbing. The fact I considered giving another man an oil massage or the fact that it's logistics getting in the way haha

I asked for info last year

Tue, 2019-06-11 10:17

I asked for info last year on crayfishing behind Garden Island. Little Johnny answered my question with a depth range that he said was a good area to look which worked out awesome for me I now have heaps of spots marked for my pots and last year when some people were nor going too well even through the whites I was doing really well by my standards quite often having to only check 2 pots and still throwing some back. Sorry I never thanked you johnny but you did help a lot.
