preparing freshly caught octopus for bait
Submitted by randall df223 on Mon, 2015-01-12 19:33
How does everyone prepare fresh occy for bait. I have read or been told somewhere that it's best to skin it so it does bloat up with water and also soak it in fish oil.
any opinions or other suggestions?

Yeah, rake the skin off the tentacles with a serrated knife. Fish the tentacle on snelled hooks or similar to make it present well, if there's a dhuie or something close by, he will grab it.

the problem I found when I
the problem I found when I didn't skin it was it would swell up and sometimes cover the point of the hook, and also didn't present as well.

Yep, getting the skin off is
Yep, getting the skin off is the way to go, leave the suckers on, cut the legs into 6-8" long baits on a snelled set of hooks.
On the snell I go for a 9/0 mutso followed by a 6/0 for the upper set of hooks.
On the lower set I go for a 6/0 followed by a 2/0.
Leaders are 130lb and main line is 100lb braid ( got to give the fish a chance hey LOL NOT )

"Skull drag"
Reminds me off a mate in Karratha who used very heavy gear to Bulldoze anything away from the Noahs. Pissed myself watching him brutilize the poor fish on the hooks.

No skull dragging, still fish
No skull dragging, still fish with a light drag.
Just the line lasts longer, snags and stuff, plus if you need to put the hurt on a big boy... you can.
How many good size Dhus have been lost by people fishing light?
I used to fish 40-50lb years ago and lost some big fish, dont lose them once their hooked now.

Hell you fish heavy !
My heaviest trace is only 60 and main line 25 or 30 but wholly support the smaller hook on the snood for the lower trace, that is what I get all my "bycatch" of huge KGW on

Same here
Never fish with anything over 50lb and run a 2/O Mustad Hoodlum on the bottom hook and a 7/0 on the top they're strong little hooks and get plenty of nice KGW as well as the big stuff.

by "snelled hooks" you mean
by "snelled hooks" you mean one above the other on the same leader? like the SA mulloway rig? eg the extreme tackle shallow water snapper rig?

Yep, just like that. But also in saying that, I've tied a hook to the line and left a large tag on the knot an used that to tie my second hook, they are fixed into position like that but still work just as well.
